Anna Cook Reports & Reviews (1)

- Santa Monica, CA, USA

On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, I had posted shoes for sale on EBay. I received a message on my EBay account from an account called Anna Cook stating that the account holder was the man’s wife, and he wanted to buy the shoes I had listed.

There were multiple texts back and forth (his number is 860-393-1239), but the upshot is that I said yes he could buy the shoes, and he also asked me to buy gift cards because he wanted to give them to his nephew and could not leave work. So he sent me $360.00 which was confirmed by an email from [email protected] I went to the market to buy a Steam card, but there weren’t any there. I texted him at 860-393-1239 to let him know and he replied by text, asking me to take a picture of all the available gift cards and send them to him. Which I did. Then he texted me back to say just buy $200 worth of Google cards. Which I did. I went home and received an e-mail from [email protected] saying that they had to verify the cards. They asked me to take a picture of the codes on the back of the cards, which I did and sent to that address. Then he asked if I could also buy Steam Cards and he was going to send me the money first. I received an email from [email protected] that showed I had received $350.00 (he said $300 was for the cards and $50 was for my “stress”) so I went and bought the cards, and sent a picture of the receipts and codes to [email protected]. Then I waited for PayPal to verify the purchases. Then he texted saying he needed an additional $500.00. After may texts back and forth (including one with his Pennsylvania’s Driver’s License), I agreed to buy $350.00. Which I did. Around midnight, I checked the PayPal e-mail, and they said there had been an error, and they had double-billed Anna Cook’s account, so I would have to send $300.00 and Pay Pal would reimburse me. Which I did. Then I received one more mail from PayPal, which stated that the money was ready to be reimbursed to me, but I would have to upgrade my account to a “Business” level and they gave me a telephone number, 757-800-6139, to call for information on how to upgrade the account. I called but no one answered. 2 minutes later, I received a text from the same number and I asked them how to upgrade my account. They said that I had to pay $500.00. I finally became concerned that this was not legitimate, since I did not think that PayPal would text. I looked on line and got PayPal’s number, and I called. That’s when I found out I had been defrauded and PayPal would and could not do anything for me because I had made these decisions myself. I had my school call as well and the school representative was told the same thing, after speaking with a supervisor, “Joel” at 10:50 am on 09/04/19.

I know I was at fault, which only made this devastating loss even worse. I wanted to report it to stop this person if possible, and also to make sure the PayPal tries to protect it’s clients better. This was the first time I had used PayPal, and the address that the verifications came from, [email protected], is actually a valid PayPal address.
