I was sent a check for over 2400 and asked to make Walmart purchases I did not cash the check

- Detroit, MI, USA

I received a text message from a 313 264 4294 number, it sent me to a site like Walmart promising i could become a secret shopper, all I would have to do is fill out a survey of my name, number, address and date of birth. I did, and afterward did my research and discovered I was tricked by a scam. You can only communicate through text from the numbers provided. They ask you to accept the job throught texting "accepted" with you name behind the word. Then they send a check to the address you provide from the survey you fill out. I noticed the scam after filling out the survey and when they mailed the counterfeit check, I text them that i recognize they are a scam and that I will report them, and I found bbb.org to report them immediately.

I was contacted via my LinkedIn account from a known contact, similar to someone else who recently logged this company as a scam earlier this month. I found out after a few days that the contact's LinkedIn account was indeed hacked and that the invitation was not from him. Several days after, a Priority Mail envelope with a poorly typed letter and a cashier's check arrived in the amount of $*** asking me to deposit the check within 24 hours and to text the number above when the deposit was made, along with my first and last name, then once again 24 hours later after the check cleared, again, making sure I send along my full name in the text for "confirmation". I was then to wait for a text from the number listed above for further instructions on how to spend the money for my assignment, then at the end, deduct my "pay" of $*** and await instructions for the next assignment.

To be honest, if the envelope was simple instructions to be a secret shopper, I may not have been so wary of this scam, however, why would you need $*** to go into a store to evaluate customer service? And why would I need to buy that much merchandise to evaluate anything? This is what tipped me off to this being a scam and led me here. Hopefully more people do their research first like me and don't get sucked into this scam - the possible losses are too great.
