The lady named "Gina Ortiz" was moving into an apartment and needed to rehome her 2 Siberian Huskies. We had e-mailed at least 50 times before I decided I would take one, I searched under the scam sites and found nothing on her, and from what she was saying, everything seemed legit. The first thing she did was say she would take the pet to the airport ASAP so I could have her that day. She then asked me for $300 for the Pet Courier "International Air Transport Association" His name was "Carlos Xaxier" and flight fee. She asked this to be sent via an Amazon gift card. Right after I sent it she said it wouldn't work and she needed me to send another one, I checked the balance on the previous card and it was still there. She asked that I pay in cash this time, so I stupidly did, sent her another $300. She said it worked and all was paid for, the pet was dropped off at the airport, and they would be calling me to confirm everything. This is when "Carlos" called me and said that my pet needed a "pressure vaccine" or something of that nature so she did not die on the plane and that this would be a fully refundable $650. I was skeptical and asked him a ton of questions like why did I have to pay this if you're going to refund it when the pet arrives. He went into detailed information as to why and I should have known at this time that this was a scam, but I wanted the puppy so I believed him, and then "Gina" e-mailed me sounding very concerned about the puppy and all she wanted me to do is pay it, she said she used this service before and I would get my money back. I then without even thinking about it because I was worried about the puppy went to Walmart and wired them $950. As soon as I did this I snapped out of it like what was I doing, and tried to stop the transfer, but it was too late. "Carlos" then calls me and tells me that the puppy is stuck at a layover in Virginia and now needs pet insurance for another "Fully refundable" $750. This is when I asked to speak to the manager, he was not there of course. I told him I thought I was being scammed, he got all defensive telling me he would never do that he's just following the rules. He then e-mailed me an explanation of what the $750 was for. I ignored him, then "Gina" the owner starts emailing me telling me to just pay it so her baby can get to me. I told her that I was not sending any more money, that she already told me that the pet was insured for 30 days. I played along, just to see what else I could get out of her, she just kept responding telling me to please pay, it's refundable, please just take out a cash advance on a credit card. Then "Carlos" kept calling me so I answered and he told me if I did not pay, my puppy would be euthanized and I would be sued by them. This is when I went off on both of them and I have heard nothing from them since. I feel disgusted and so very stupid. How can we prevent this from happening to someone else? Is there any way to get security footage from the Walmart in Michigan and track these people down? I know I will never get my money back because of my total stupidity, I should have known better.
