ASOS US Sales LLC Reports & Reviews (1)

I entered a sweepstakes at Asos by making a purchase during their Premier sale. I had no idea I was entered but found out today that I won one of the $200 prizes. The terms of the giveaway is here:https://www.asos.com/us/discover/marketing-terms-and-conditions/12102021-pr... />
Specifically item #15 says: 15. In the event that the winner is a US resident, they will be required to complete and return an IRS Form W-9 and furnish their social security number that will be used only for the purpose of reporting the Winner’s prize earnings to the Internal Revenue Service, as required by law."

A W-9 should only be filled out if you are a consultant, freelance worker, etc. A 1099-MISC is only needed per IRS regulations if the prize is over $600.

This seems like a phishing scam to get SSN. Or a tax fraud, like they want to make it look like they have a bunch of free lance workers they gave money to as a bonus or something for a tax write off.
