Directv/eBay promotional discount scam.. I called the number because I know the discount on my monthly tv service bill is expiring soon. The number you dial takes you to a voice menu that sounds real with real options you can select by number. I should have seen my first red flag because no legit company has a numeric option (it was 5 for me) for DISCOUNTS!! Literally the word discounts. Of course I chose that...([censored], I know..) The guy said his name was Jason (probably fake but anyways...) and I asked him about my account and the discount expiring soon and he said yeah he would absolutely check on that for me. Asked for my name, address and the four digit passcode number associated with the account. Of course I gave him all this. (????? I know I know!) He said he could offer me a discount because it was being sponsored by eBay and that I could also get Cinemax for the next three months for free. This is where I started to become suspicious. I have heard nothing in the media or through all the emails I get from Directv about any partnerships between them and eBay. As he was explaining the terms of the discount it finally dawned on me that this was a scam. He said that I would be paying only $40 a month for three years but that in order to secure the promotion I had to pay using eBay gift cards. He continues saying I had to pay within two hours to receive the promotional offer....He also had me turn on my tv and go to channel 515 to check and see if the free access to Cinemax was working. I told him no I would not be able to get to the store that soon to buy these one time use gift cards. He graciously (??) extends that time frame to five-six pm. He gives me a discount code “DT9797A” and says to call 1-877-862-9835 to connect to the billing department to pay my bill for the next 10 months. Thankfully I hung up without further damage and called the REAL Directv. The real directv agent told me it was a scam and there are no promotions going on with eBay. I immediately changed my passcode number and cancelled the three month Cinemax trial. (I am not sure if the scammer signed me up for that trial or if it was something I had done months ago and forgot or what...) and am going to monitor my accounts for a while. While I was on the phone with the real Directv I googled “directv eBay scam” and sure enough an article pops up from February of this year about the same scam. I should have called the real Directv phone number to begin with...

At 5:34 pm tonight, eastern standard time, I received a phone call on my cell phone from a person claiming to work for ATT/DIRECTV. This man stated that I qualify for a reduced bill for the next (2) years, have all the premium channels along with the NFL Sunday ticket for the next (2) years at no additional cost. He also said I will get all of this for (2) years while my bill will be discounted from approximately $197.00 a month to only $149.00 a month. And I qualify for this promotion due to being a long time subscriber/customer. But, I will first have to go to a Walgreens, Target or some other store and purchase a EBAY card and load $300.00 dollars onto the card and call them back at this number: 888-588-2434 extension 1. That number and extension was sent to my cell phone by this other number: 310-347-0487. They also said I would receive a $100.00 visa card to use wherever I wanted. I could not get any of this promotion if I did not load the $300.00 dollars on the EBAY card and send it to them first and foremost. After trying to get all the information from them that I could, I called DIRECTV myself and asked about this promotion. They said it was a scam just as I thought it was. Directv has a promotion similar to this promotion but it is for first time subscribers, not the long time subscriber such as myself. I really feel these people are scamming many people into having that $300.00 dollars sent to them and they just loose their hard earned money and get nothing in return. Please look into this if at all possible. Again, they used (3) different phone numbers, they are as follows:

The number they called me with was: 1-800-288-2020. After I hung up, they called me back twice.

The number they text me to call after putting money on the EBAY card to send to them was: 888-588-2434 extension 1.

That text came from the following number: 310-347-0487.

Thank you very much. I hope this is useful and I hope you can do something to stop this scam.
