- Fort Collins, CO, USA • Feb 09, 2024

On Sunday, February 4, I googled United Airlines official website and was prompted to call this number: 1-888-502-0830 to purchase tickets. I spoke to a star team member about purchasing tickets from Denver to Fort Lauderdale (departing July 6 and returning July 13) for 2 adults and 2 children. The person sounded very professional and offered flights that fit my budget and times. So, I purchased the tickets using my credit card. Then on Tuesday, February 6, I received a text from the same person asking if I had received the email with my tickets. I told him no and he then told me that he could not purchase the tickets for this price ($2,576.80) because there were only 3 seats available for that flight and I needed 4 seats. He further told me I would have to pay an additional cost of $49.00 per person for purchase these tickets. So, I went online to Priceline and was able to purchase almost the same flight tickets for less money (2,560.84). I text the person back and told them to cancel because I had purchased tickets on Priceline and since they had not purchased any tickets per the emails I received. The person than told me he could get the flights I wanted for the same price quoted on Sunday. I told him to cancel, and he kept telling me to cancel Priceline and I told him no. I noted on Tuesday, there was a pending charge on my card for the (2,576.80) and I contacted my credit card company about the possible scam, and they told me they could not do anything until this amount was processed. I checked on Thursday, and the amount had processed. I called my credit card company, and they are disputing the charges, but I was told airline tickets are hard to dispute. I talked to United Airlines customer service, and they told me the flight (DWVWTP) had been cancelled. This was the flight number the person had told me he had reserved on Sunday. I contacted the United Airlines complainant department via email addressing the situation and they responded there was nothing they could do for me and to contact the travel agent. I have emailed them, but as of today I have not heard from them.

I entered cheap tickets into my search engine. I found Trip Book Fly. I received a confirmation number for a flight on Friday. I called them and they said all I had was a confirmation number, not a ticket. The agent said the ticket at $238 was gone, and the ticket was now $500, and I could have one carry on. Then she told me the ticket had just gone up to $900. And the $238 tickets are gone. I asked to speak to a supervisor. A supervisor came on the line, and said he could put me on standby, and if the ticket is still available. I called back to ask if the ticket was available, they said no, I had cancelled my ticket. I said I had not cancelled my ticket, I was waiting for a $238 ticket. I asked for a supervisor, but he wasn't available. I asked for his name, she said she said she couldn't share his name or number. I told her it was a scam.

On 3/26/23 a family member logged on to www.fareofinder.com to book (4) airline tickets from Detroit to Punta Cana International Airport, Dominican Republic

They were given a confirmation number of 22864 for the following:

(4) Delta Tickets from DTW to PUJ for $612.34 per person

Specifically, the flights were

5/5/23 Delta flight 2375 to ATL, and Delta flight 1755 to PUJ

5/13/23 Delta flight 1755 to ATL, and Delta flight 1172 to DTW

They accepted payment and sent an email confirming the transaction with the above confirmation number

The following day they called and said the flight would be over $1200 per person and offered other travel arrangements on other airlines at a significant increase (a bait and switch technique).

I escalated on behalf of my family and spoke with "Hank" who forwarded me to "Brian Miller" who agreed that this was a bait and switch. He would not provide his real name, email but gave an extension number of 10787 and claimed he was in a call center in Illinois. He did not honor the prior confirmation number and hung up the phone.

At this same time on there website the same flight was showing for $721.37 per person for the Delta Flight. Being a Delta sky mileage member, I immediately called Delta and was advised to submit this to the BBB. I spoke with Patricia and Brittany at Delta customer service. I have a confirmation via text that the flight proposed by www.fareofinder.com was $1620.85 per person. I have the entire escalation communication with Delta as additional information.

I called Fareofinder back to talk to Brian Miller and they blocked the original cell phone number. I called from another cell phone within 5 minutes and Brian Miller was not available and could not leave a message.

I was searching for airline tickets on Skyscanner and found a round trip flight from Austin to Boston for $238.72. I clicked the link and was brought to Addontrip.com. I continue to book through Addontrip. Then later that day they called to say that we owed an additional $260. I tried to cancel my flight and they hung up on me. I tried their website and there is no place to cancel the flight. I then called my bank and canceled my card. Now I have to spend time finding a new flight and resetting up all my autodraft accounts once my new card comes in.

After all this I googled Addontrip and found several complaints about being scammed. I even looked up the address that they have on their website and it is linked to several other scam companies.

- Marietta, GA, USA

I searched for an airline ticket via Bookingbuddy.com. I selected the JustCost option and was routed to Addontrip company. The price shown for the selected flights was $116.06. After completing Addontrip’s form, providing credit card information and submitting, I received a booking confirmation. Shortly thereafter, I received a phone call from a representative at Addontrip advising I would need to pay an additional $117.00 for a total of $350.06 vs. $116.06 as advertised. I informed the representative to cancel my $116.00 purchase, and was advised that amount was non-refundable. At this present time, no charges have been applied to my credit card. However, I notified American Express the $116.06 from Addontrip should be flagged as “Fraudulent Charges” if applied. I’m reporting as I feel this is not good business practices demonstrated by Addontrip and suggest they are closely monitored for other related instances. Thank you.
