JC Ranches Reports & Reviews (1)

- Galveston, TX, USA

We contacted Jeanna Johnston in September to see if she had Berniedoodle puppies. She responded saying that she did not but that she did have Cavalier King Charles Spaniels coming up soon. She had 2 puppies per litter, so we adopted both puppies(brother and sister). We did not find any luck with shipping the puppies to Galveston so my mom(Cynthia Thompkins) traveled to Oklahoma to pick them up. The puppies seemed younger than what was originally discussed. Mrs. Johnston did not take them to the veterinarian for a health check-up but we had previously gotten a healthy dog from her so we trusted her word that BOTH puppies were healthy. Throughout this adoption process, she was very unresponsive and did not give us the papers for either puppy. Once the puppies arrived home to Galveston, we realized the boy, Lucky, was MUCH smaller than his sister and was acting very tired, which made us realize that we did indeed need to have him checked out by a vet. The next day, Lucky was taken to the vet where he was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. When we contacted Mrs. Johnston about it, she became very defensive and wanted all vet records, plus a second opinion. We just wanted a healthy, happy puppy for our family. We were hoping the hole in his head would close and he would be fine after that. However, after making a few calls to some other Oklahoma breeders, they said she should've caught that medical issue like any other good breeder would. A couple of days later, Lucky came down with a cough and proceeded to get worse. We took him back to the vet where they performed X-Rays of his lungs, to which they found an infection. They also noticed his heart was much larger than what it should be so they sent off the results to a radiologist. We then proceeded to contact Mrs. Johnston who offered to trade Lucky for an 18-month-old dog to which we declined. Mrs. Johnston was supposed to have Lucky picked up however, he died before she came down. She then requested us to pay to have an autopsy done on Lucky because she refused to believe us. She was trying to force another dog onto us to which we also declined. At this point, we just wanted our money back. She did refund the cost of the dog but she did not do that correctly. It was done through PayPal and she didn't actually refund it. She put it in as a sale from us to her, which required us to have to pay the fees and taxes associated with PayPal.She then attacked my wife and I saying that she did not instruct us to take Lucky to the vet. In conclusion, Jeanna Johnston should have taken the correct steps to ensure the health of Lucky by taking him to the vet before selling him to our family. Her lack of care and concern caused a lot of emotional trauma for my kids, my wife, and myself. Please, help us save another family from this heartbreak.
