I received the following text out of nowhere. I have no connection with this company or this Michael Wilkes, COO. I looked into the names used here - Michael Wilkes and J Fernando Construction. I found that there is a Michael Wilkes that owns a construction company out of North Carolina and that there is a Jonathan Fernando that is a Project Manager, Construction and Infrastructure Standards Development in Canada. I did not find anything like this company in Michigan and find that the use of these names in the text suspicious. They’re using legitimate construction executive names in a fake profile. As mentioned, they will send you more information through email. You have to copy the email address out and email them and not text.

Honestly, I don’t like responding to texts like this anyway, because scammers then know it’s a working number and you’ll get more scams for weeks on end afterwards. That’s happened to me before, so better to ignore.

While I do need the money and the work would be perfect for me, as I am disabled and a single mom, I feel more than likely that’s why I am being targeted. The fact that there was already a report here of this scam just confirmed my suspicions and I’d hate to see more vulnerable people hurt in this scam.

I will share the text here, copied and pasted directly, as-is, here:

I added screenshots of the searches I did for these names and the results, which don’t correspond with this text. Also, while it appears there is a Fernando Construction in Michigan, they’re temporarily closed. And I can’t help but wonder if it is due to this scam. It looks to be a one-man operation - not something that would have a COO and would be able to hire someone very part-time with this salary to do payroll. I feel horrible for this guy if that’s what happened, because on HomeAdvisor he has stellar reviews.

People are desperate for good paying jobs with flexibility to work at home and with hours . It’s the dream job, so perfect to setup a scam. Be careful out there people! There are so many wolves in sheep clothing ready to strike at vulnerable populations like myself and probably like you, if you’re reading this.

I might reach out to the emails and numbers associated with the legitimate names and I’ll report back if I’m able.

One last thing, please forward any texts you get like this to 7726 - it’s the scam/fraud number for AT&T. Not sure what other services use, but I know they have something similar, so look those up if you’re not with AT&T. You can forward the message and then they’ll ask for the number(s) and/or email(s) associated with the message, which you send separately. I’ve done this consistently lately, especially after my egregious mistake of trying to respond to one of the scammers, which just confirmed I was a real person using that number and led to an over abundance of scam texts for a while. Doing this has drastically reduced the spam I’ve gotten.

Wanted to add that I haven’t signed up for any online job search sites, so this text came out of nowhere and was addressed in a general matter with just “Greetings” as seen in my copy and paste of the text.

I’m adding a screenshot of the text, which shows the suspicious email as well (not a company email, just gmail, and not a real name associated with it).

Received a text saying that this construction company is looking for a payroll manager, who is interested in working from home, handling payroll task. Working three days for about 2-3 hours a week, getting paid $4,500 a month. Once you respond, then a link is sent for you to fill out information. I did not open the link for fear of a virus but do assume that this is an attempt to get personal information such as Social Security Number, etc... I did look up the company and they look to have a legitimate website, however, when calling both numbers there was a recording that said the person was not available- the website is un-secure, and when you try to clink on any of the links, none of them work.

I did get a call back from someone with very broken english and when I told him why I called, he hung up on me.
