To give some background I have applied for 100’s of job positions using indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, Remote work Junkie and a few other websites, so at this point I can not keep up with which jobs I have applied for. I received a message from a phone number that said “Alert from Lucem Health, Inc. We are impressed by your background and you have been invited for an online Interview. You made it to the Next step for the position of a Customer Service Representative/Data Entry/Administrative Assistant. You are required to download and set up Microsoft Teams Account and if you have one already, use it. Add Stephanie Harley (https://teams.live.com/l/invite/FAAuydzJWjdpjkR8wc) and connect with her for your interview. Job ID is REQ-1206”. Since job applications do ask for your phone number and typically you can check a box that allows them to contact you through text messages with any updates, I thought nothing of it especially since I was looking for remote job positions. I sent a message to Stephanie Harley through Microsoft Teams and she responded asking for the job ID and I gave it to her. She gave me details about the job saying it was an office in Raleigh but the job was 100% remote work from home, all of the equipment would be provided and I would get paid for training $20.00 an hour, after training the pay would be $35.00 an hour. It sounded too good to be true but she sent me the website and it appeared to be a real company that worked with AI to improve healthcare. I figured since AI is now reaching it’s peak it was probably a new company that was doing really well and they must have come across my resume on indeed or LinkedIn. She said that she would be the one conducting the interview and she asked me a total of 10 questions, one of the questions being who I banked with and for how long so that the company could see if I was compatible with their direct deposit payment system. We never got on the phone or on a zoom call everything was through the messages on Microsoft Teams. After I answered the questions she said I had answered the questions impressively well and if I was considered for the position I would be sent a payment to help set up my mini office at home. A few minutes had went by and she came back with the “good news” that the company wanted to offer me the position. I was ecstatic that I had been offered such a great position after being on the search for a new job for four months and having no luck. She continued to give me job details, including how long training would last, what benefits I would receive as a full time employee and the Microsoft teams contact information for my “training supervisor Darius Norman”. I contacted him and he welcomed me to the team, he told me he would be helping me through the training process. I was told that a check would be mailed to me and they would give me the information to a “accredited and trusted vendor” who I would order my office supplies from. He then said he was sending me my “employment letter” which consisted off the job offer, the I-9 form, w-4, direct deposit information, and my information for a background check. He asked that I print the documents, sign them, scan them and email them back to him but I did not have a printer and informed him I would need to go to Office Depot to do that. He said it was fine I didn’t need to do that, he said just fill them out online and an electronic signature was fine. I completed all of the documents which of course included my SSN, my routing and account number to my bank account and other personal information. I sent them back to him through email and informed him that I was done, he said he would sent it over to the company head department. He later came back and said everything had been approved, he asked if my phone service was prepaid or postpaid because the company would handle the cost of any activation fees since one of my pieces of office equipment would be a new iPhone for work. He said that there was nothing else to do that day and my training would start on Monday at 8:00am est. Monday comes and I am up at 8:00a.m I text him on Microsoft Teams and he sends me task questions to do that needed to be submitted by 4p.m. He informed me that the first 7 days of training would be based on objective and research training followed by the last 7 days and that would be practical training once I received my equipment for my “mini office”. I had 6 questions to answer, no question answer could be less than 500 words so it took me hours to research and answer the questions. Once I was done I emailed him a word document that was 5 pages long with the answers to the questions. He informed me that I was done for the day and he would speak with me at 8:00a.m the following day. Tuesday at 8:00a.m he sends me a message and informs me that I should be receiving my check, he also sends me the UPS tracking number and informs me to text him once I have received it. I get the package I open the check and it is for $4,950. I tell him I received it, he informs me that I must send him a picture of the check for “authorization”. I send him a picture of the check and he tells me “You are to deposit the check through your bank ATM machine which is an accounting task. This is just to test your ability in the accounting field as part of your training. Once deposited, the funds would be made available for withdrawal the next day (within 24 hours or less). Once the funds are available tomorrow morning I will refer you to the company local vendor from which you are to purchase your working equipment from to enable you start up your training and orientation immediately. How long will it take you to get it done now?” I inform him that I would leave immediately to take it to the bank and would let him know once it was deposited. My boyfriend told me that I should go inside to cash it to make sure I didn’t mess anything up, I did not want to go inside since Darius my trainer told me to do it at the ATM but I figured why not go inside just to make sure I don’t do anything wrong. I took the check inside and the teller starts looking at it funny, she then takes it back to what looked like her manager and the manager comes out and informs me that the check is fake. Words can not explain how devastating it was to find out that for five days I was being lied to, scammed, and manipulated into thinking that this was a real job position. I have been unemployed for four months now and I thought I had finally got a job. I had already sent all of my personal information to this person, woke up at 8:00a.m for what I thought was “training”, received a check for “office equipment”, and it was fake. Had I not went inside of my bank I would have cashed that check, it would have probably went through, I would have ordered equipment from a fake vendor who would have taken the money and I would have probably owed the bank $4,950 or the fake training supervisor would have probably asked for the money. I have no clue what would have happened, I do not understand why there are fake jobs out here, I can not understand why someone would do such a horrible thing by not only wasting your time and feeding you false hope, but he took my personal information and I do not know what to do about it. The manager at the bank said that people come in with fake checks from jobs all the time. After doing some research I learned that this is more common than I thought it was and even though none of the scams reported were from the same company that I had been scammed by, it was definitely a similar situation. I say all of this to say do your research before you accept any remote job position, even if the companies website seems legit and you can’t find any bad information or reviews that prove it’s a scam that doesn’t mean it isn’t one. Scamming has become a 9-5 job for some people and unfortunately you will be a victim of it if you’re not careful.
