Offer-up: Personal ad for a vehicle Reports & Reviews (1)

- Everett, WA, USA

I found a 2003 vehicle for sale for an unbelievably low price ($1500). I contacted the advertiser and they replied it was put on the site for their aunt. The replied the "aunt" could be contacted thru her email address.

I did that and this was the response:

Hi, I have received your email regarding the 2003 Toyota Tacoma SR5 with only 87,572 miles. The truck is in perfect condition with clear title, no accidents, no liens or loans and it has just been completely serviced. The engine runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. The price for the truck is $1,500(including delivery and handling to your address).I'm selling this truck because my child of only 26 years died 2 months ago in a bike accident, the car belonged to my son and it brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it.

Me and my husband travel a lot with our business and we want to make this deal through eBay's Buyer Protection Program, so if you're interested in purchasing the truck just reply me your full name, full address and phone number, so I can notify eBay. Once that is done, they will contact you in the next 24 hours to explain the entire procedure.

I received an invoice from "eBay's Buyer Protection Program" asking for payment in the form of $500 gift cards.

These are the instructions included in the email from "eBay":

For your purchase you need to buy as many eBay Cards as you need in order to complete the total price of the item.

i.e. For a payment of $1,500.00 you need to buy 3 eBay Cards loaded with $500.00 each.

Once you bought the eBay Cards and loaded the debit, you have to confirm your payment.

How to confirm your payment?

Once you have loaded each card, gently scratch off the security coating on the back of the card.

You will see the 13 digit code required to validate your payment.

The payment needs to be confirmed by replying to our email [email protected] with the

following payment details:

eBay Card Number (13 Digit Number from the back of your Card)

Picture with the back of each card (with the code scratched off)

Store receipt

I was excited to make the purchase, but intuition was telling me to be wary. I started out to try and find $500 gift cards, but none of the places I went to had any. After the third try, I decided to look into this a little more and found the same M.O. was being used to scam folks out of their money; and that those that did provide funds in the form of gift cards had no recourse and were unable to recover their money.

Need less to say, I did not close the deal. After I sent a note saying I was not going to make the purchase, I received an email that tried to guilt me into finishing the sale.

Here is that email:

I m sorry because you feel like that about me.Now,if you are in my place to sell something, you'll take the risk to cheat people and have the police on your door in a few days?????I don't think so!!! I m in this position!!!! Liberty is more precious then everything in this world!!

I am a 47 year old woman who owns her own successful business. We are all college educated. I didn't get to this stage in life by doing dumb things. I want to take this opportunity to assure you that there is nothing to be worried about in this deal. I would never cheat you or swindle you!! I have a reputation to protect and i am a good Christian and I do not want to be imprisoned. You have my word and good faith on the fact that I'll keep my end of the bargain. I have never lied and cheated anyone. I will not risk my career, my freedom and my future for anything in the world! I would rather close this deal with other person than to know that you'll be very stressed hoping that I am a honest person, until you receive your truck. Your peace of mind is a lot more important than this deal!!!

Look ,we must trust one another.

If you decide not to go through with it there is no problem. I got quite a few offers left. Please get back to me and let me know what you decide.Thank you for your time and interest. Whatever you decide I wish you good luck.

Thank you,

I hope this helps someone else who wants to make an honest deal and does not realize the crooks that are out there.
