This is where it all started... I received a call from this scammer who goes by the name Erick and he asked me if I'm looking for a job. When I said yes, he said that he has an excellent opportunity for me and the client name is eBay who's offering 140k-180k as the salary.
He confirmed my email address and asked me to go through the job description and said that he'll call back later to check if I received the email or not.
He sends an email immediately and I keep on looking for it. Just out of curiosity, I happen to check my Junk Folder and there it is! I go through the job description and I think I may not be the perfect fit for the role as it demands very generic requirements. Below is the email I received from the scammer:

---------------------------------------------------------

If you read closely, it asks for a Sig Sigma Certification which is mandatory. Now, since I didn't have it, I didn't respond to him.

He kept on calling. I ignored his call twice but picked the call third time. He said that did you check your inbox? I said yes, it was in the junk mail but also since I don't have the certification, I don't think I'm fit for this role. He says that we can negotiate the certification part, just send me your resume and I can send it to the hiring Manager at eBay and give it a chance.

I was like, OK. And sent the resume.

This guy called me again. I missed his call a few times and then picked up the call finally. This time, he gave me the "Good News" that the client really liked my profile and based on the great experience I have, they even shortlisted me for the new project. I was happy to learn that.

He then asked me if I have 10-15 mins because he was going to tell me something very important and asked me to open the web browser and go to google. I gave him the confirmation that I'm online now.
He asked me to search "ebay vppa"
after doing that, he asked me to click on the first link that read "eBay Teams Up with Apple, Samsung Austin ... - eBay Inc." and he said that this is the project for which I've already been shortlisted.

Now comes the important part...
He asked me to open the job description. I asked, "Where is that?" he said it's the one I emailed you. I said, oh ok, that went to my junk mailbox and I didn't have it open on my computer, so please let me go to my mailbox and check. He said ok, go ahead.

I opened the email and started to look at the job description. If you look closely, there is no real job description, but assuming that everything on the email falls under job description, I proceeded to listen.

He said, did you read it says Six Sigma (green belt) certification is mandatory? I said yes. He said that it costs about $600 but I don't need to worry. He said that he will talk to the client and will be able to negotiate the certification compulsion to a yellow belt which is much cheaper compared to the Green Belt. He said that he will call him and tell that the candidate doesn't have that much money to spend on something that doesn't even guarantee a job.
He also said that he wants me to not spend that much on a certification before I get the job.
He said that he'll call me back in 10 mins. after the negotiation on the certification is done (from Green Belt to Yellow Belt).

This is when I actually felt something is fishy and I immediately blocked his number.
Why did I do that? Below are some glaringly minor details:

1. I didn't apply for any job at eBay - but ok, he found my resume somewhere and decided to give me a chance

2. The salary is way beyond what I can actually get (140k-180k is ridiculously high)

3. His email went to my junk mailbox

4. How can any "Client" be so impressed with my profile/resume just based on my 8-9 years of experience, to an extent that they even finalized a project for me? Just based on what I wrote on a paper that is publicly available? Too good to be true!

5. He asked me if I know Six Sigma certification. I said NO. Although I had heard about it, it never was a requirement in any job I've ever applied for or anybody with whom I work at my company has!

6. He was Indian (may be from some neighbouring country too) and was clearly faking the accent

7. I looked up on LinkedIn, the recruiter had no profile

8. I went on the website based on his email ID and clearly that was fake. Just go to their website, all the links are fake!

Although I wasn't duped of money, I was definitely duped of time and efforts. Beware of such scammers. They are becoming smarter day by day!

I think, in the end he was just trying to steer me to buy some sort of six sigma certification from his preferred choice of learning websites and dupe me.
Thank God I didn't fall for this.
