Shankar Consulting Reports & Reviews (1)

I was using my laptop to check my bank statement via the Internet. I had trouble, so closed and started over. A popup message appeared stating that I was permanently blocked from this site and to call the support Tecnical Team at 888-559-0043 to resolve it. I called the number and "Bruce" answered and I told him what happened. He said I needed to have security software installed and he mentioned options, including Norton, and I chose Norton. He quoted that it would cost $199.99 for one-year coverage, with options for 3-5 years, cheaper in total (and was pushy for me to purchase multi-year). At some point, I believe he said he would connect to my computer. I agreed only to the one year subscription. He instructed me to make the check payable to Shankar Consulting, Inc., and to scan it. I scanned it and saw the check image on my monitor. Then Bruce said he was sending me the information via my printer. I had given him other information such as my address, email, etc. for processing the request. The printed form has a header simply of "My Computer Service" and it appears like a receipt for Norton security one-year. The form shows Job ID#7478. He instructed me to leave my computer on for one hour and that he would call in 5 minutes and then again in 1 hour. He called again to see if it was fixed and it did in fact work (no pop-up messages). I did not use the computer that evening. The next day, I Googled 'Shankar Consulting' and saw several FRAUD reports on Shankar. After that, I unplugged my computer and removed the battery to reduce the opportunity for them to access my computer. The next day, I had my bank stop payment on my check. Following that, I received a threatening call from Shankar Consulting that they were going to turn it over to collections because they had spent so much time resolving my issues to get my computer to work (however, the inital quote for $199 was for a Norton license, not service). I understand now that they likely had malware on my computer that caused the pop-up with the phone number. Please let me know what else I can do to ensure this company is properly reported for this scam that results in a pop-up with their phone number, leading to this unwarranted transaction.
