I'm glad I looked at the scams presented on this page, otherwise I would not have given this one a second thought. A gentleman friend requested me on Facebook. I did not know him so I let it sit there for about a week and I don't know why I changed my mind. As soon as I accepted it, he left me a message a couple of hours later. We ended up having a weeks worth of communication in which he told me (because I require a lot of information before deciding if you are trustworthy or not) that he was on a secret mission for the UN in Kabul, Afghanistan, and he made a facebook page secretly because he was looking for someone of his choosing to spend the rest of his life with and share his retirement. He said that he needed help from the outside contacting the UN for his retirement, but that it would involve money and he didn't want to ask me up front because he did not want me to think he was one of those types of dudes, and that he cared for me and wanted to keep my friendship. He had no other friends on his page and only a couple of pictures. But I thought something was weird because of the way he talked. They weren't proper sentences, so that's when I asked him more information about himself because I felt like he was from somewhere else. He told me I was distrustful of him and didn't know why because I didn't even know him. I was able to calm him down, so that we could keep chatting and I could find out more. He told me that he was a widower and that his wife died 4 years ago and his son has been asking for him to find a mom for him as his friends at school were making fun of him for not having one and that's why he created the facebook page, but if anyone found out about it, he could get into trouble. He told me that he used to live in Cheyenne, Wyoming, but moved to North Carolina where a teacher is taking care of his son while he is on duty, of which he's been on this secret mission for a year now in Kabul. He said he moved here from Greece as a child and he was an orphan over there and that is why he has a teacher taking care of his son. He said that people die everyday over there in the "war zone". He lost friends in a convoy blast recently and that was another reason he just wanted to come home to be with his son. He wanted to apply for his urgent retirement but he needed help. Then I lost contact with him and when I asked what happened, he said he unfriended me to make sure that I was the one, to see if I would look for him and send a request back, which I did. Then he asked me if I could help him out of there so we could get to know each other better. He said he felt a connection with me. I told him that I was still skeptical and that I needed to ask more questions but if he wanted to give me the information then I would see what I could do. He told me that he didn't understand why I didn't trust him, that he cared for me and even loved me. I asked him how could he love someone he just met and he explained that to him, love has no days or times. I still didn't trust him. He told me that I had to email the UN and tell them that I was his girlfriend asking for his urgent retirement. He said that once out he would have to pay for a replacement there, but that he was okay with that as long as he was out. The email he gave me was as follows: [email protected]

I was very skeptical then as I knew the UN would not have a gmail account for civilians. But I played along and emailed them, I created a fake email to use for this purpose as I didn't want to use my personal one. After I sent the email the way he wanted me to, I received a reply around 2am and a reply on messenger from him at 3am. He said he was happy I was going to help him, and he couldn't wait to meet me. The email then asked for my personal information, my name, DOB, address, phone number, marital status and occupation. This is where we had a virtual argument as I told him that it looked fake and I wasn't going to help anymore. There was no UN logo and it was signed with his name. He said that what did I expect to get his retirement without giving personal information so they could verify who I was. He kept going on and on about I never trusted him anyway and he didn't know why. He just wants to get to know me and spend the rest of his life with his son and I. I told him that there were a lot of impersonators out there. I told him that if he could skype me or maybe send another picture of him to me, then maybe I could start to believe him. He said they couldn't skype in the war zone but he did send me another picture of "him" in the desert with Afghan men while he hugged a child. But as the days went by, I still stalled because something wasn't right and he made it look like someone hacked into his account, then the next day during our conversation he was completely gone. No facebook, no pictures anywhere, nothing. Even the messages he sent me on messenger were gone. It's been a week now, and I haven't heard anymore from him. I'm just glad I didn't send any money and that I saw another post about this scam on this page about the same thing. Now I can be in peace knowing it really wasn't real. It's sad people sit behind computers and do this for a "living"...just plain sad! I'm kind of glad that I'm not easily trusting, but sad because it shouldn't be that way either.
