Student Loan Department/American Financial Center Reports & Reviews (1)

I received a letter in the mail from "Student Loan Department" titled: Student Loan Payment Reduction & Forgiveness. The letter claims that as a result of the Health Care and Education Affordability Reconciliation Act of 2010 I may be eligible for total loan forgiveness and as an added bonus make no program payments to the company for the first 90 days of program participation.

I called the 1-866-342-8211 number and asked for the company name and location to verify the BBB accreditation printed on the letter as there was no return address printed on the envelope or within the letter. The representative told me the company name is American Financial Center and that they were not given the company's location so they could not provide it, that it may be in Alabama. A search of the BBB site did not locate a match, but a quick Google search of Student Loan Department resulted in a number of articles about the scam. A Google search for American Financial Center displays results for a legitimate finance company out of California who services small business owners - not college students attempting to payoff debt.
