I tried to do the 2015 Best Nine for Instagram. I tried typing my username and pop up windows popped up and a few different links were accidentally hit trying to X out on my phone and with the swiping feature to browse things were hit unintentionally. At some point a pop up showed up saying that adware was detected and listed a number for Apple iOS tech support and to call to get rid of the virus. Not being able to do anything with my safari I called the number. I had reservations but when they described things about apple and all they seemed believable. I went through and had them "remove" the virus via "remote access" after giving them my IMEI number and then my credit card info to pay for the service. They explained to me all things about how to avoid having this kind of thing happen in the future and how to avoid viruses. After the whole phone call, I was not feeling good about it and ended up googling about it and found that there are phishing scams just like this.

We gave them the following information over the phone: credit card number, expiration date, security code on the back of the credit card, address to include state and zip code, email, phone number, IMEI number from Apple phone.

Afterwards we cancelled our credit cards and ordered new cards with new numbers. We called the company and spent upwards of 60 minutes on the phone with them trying to get a refund. I don't think the company has intentions of using the IMEI number to track our location, steal information, or the like. I think the company is interested only in collecting money from those now knowledgeable about this type of scam. I also believe that this company may have written the very virus/issue that we called for them to fix. The company did not remotely access our phone using the IMEI number, that is not possible using only the IMEI number. All that "Emmanuel" from The PC Earth told us to do over the phone was: clear the history, clear the cookies, turn off the javascript, restart the phone, and turn the javascript back on. Interestingly, this is all listed on Google, step by step, so we know the company did not access our phone remotely. Also, Emmanuel told us to restart our phone and reset the javascript after he had already hung up with us.
