Was on the Best Western (BW) website on my iPhone to reserve a 2-night stay Mon-Wed at a Virginia BW location. When I selected and confirmed dates, three options loaded for the room rate: a nonrefundable rate; a $10/night higher refundable rate if cancelled by 4pm Sunday; and a higher nonrefundable rate for a suite. I selected the refundable rate knowing there was a chance our plans might change, was then directed to and did enter my credit card info. When I received booking confirmation via email, to my alarm, the email address was from RD Reservationstays.com. I tried to cancel the rez, and found an extensive form to complete requesting all kinds of personal information AND our reason for cancellation of the rez did not meet the criteria covered! The next page of the form requested full banking details including routing number, account number, exact legal name on the account, etc. When I saw this I stopped the refund process immediately. I called my credit card company -- the charge is "pending" as of today. Once the charge is "posted" the card company will put the charge into dispute. The room cost was to be $237 for the two nights; however the charge pending on my credit card is $261.99 so there was obviously some sort of fee added to the cost, which was not disclosed. I called the BW rez desk directly on their local telephone number and the front desk said they are unfamiliar with Reservationstays.com. BW asked the name on my reservation, and asked me the dates, which I provided to them. Their records show only my first and last name and the check-in and check-out dates. She looked and saw that a name of Escalabeds Group LLC was listed on the reservation, but there was no room rate provided. The property was unable to access the rez to make any alterations (cancel the room or move it to another date). Further, they said that they have no control over third party booking companies that appear to hijack the bookings right off the Best Western website at the time the customer enters and then confirms the dates of stay. She suggested joining the BW rewards member program and always logging into the site through your specific rewards number, or make sure you double-click the BW logo to insure you are in their site and have not been hijacked by a third party. This is a very disheartening state of affairs. I can only imagine the number of people falling prey to this scam.
