These scammers claim to be from Tripadvisor and call you multiple times. When you answer the first time they may ask you to press 1 to be removed from a call list, but that is just to be verified as a live number. After that, they will contact you multiple times with different numbers claiming to be from the Tripadvisor rewards department and if you can hear them okay. Whatever you do, do not say yes or okay, or anything like that. What they do is they record you saying yes and use it for confirmation for payments and stuff using your number. I get these calls daily now, the best thing to do is to just not answer unknown numbers and to wait it out. I haven't been affected by the payments or anything even though I have said yes in a call before, but I have read online that this can happen.

I wired $1300.00 to view an apartment which was listed on craigslist (https://victoria.craigslist.ca/apa/d/cozy-home-at-the-reef-james/6709717266.htm... and then if not like it, the monies would be refunded. The listing read: "Cozy Home at The Reef James Bay! - 21 Erie Street, Victoria, BC V8V 5A8, Canada." The listing was posted by an Olivia Esther Mirk (oliviaestherb11). She replied: "Hello, Thank you for your interest in my apartment (1bed/1bath) located at: 21 Erie Street, Victoria, BC V8V 5A8 , Canada. I have attached you the pictures so you can see that is in excellent condition. My job is a chemical engineer and the company I work for they had a project there in Canada that was suppose to be for the next 10 years so I've decided to buy an apartment for me and my family. Unfortunately the project I was working in Canada has been cancelled or it's on stand-by because of the Government of Canada. Therefore I was moved to the United Kingdom department where I already signed a job contract for the next 6 years. The rent for the whole apartment is $925/month utilities included (heat, hydro, water, electricity, maintenance fees, 2 parking spots, laundry in-suite, washer and dryer also included, cable and internet). In case repairs are need in the apartment the building management will help you and I will cover the costs. Pets are allowed. I'm looking for someone to rent anywhere from 3 months to 6 years or more. I know the price is below the market but I'm interested in finding the right person for the apartment that will take good care of the place. If you decide to sign the lease agreement the monthly payments can be sent through E-transfer, Bank Wire or any other payment method that is convenient for you. You can also rent the apartment furnished or unfurnished and the rent will NOT increase. A professional property management company will make the necessary arrangements for both us because it's the first time I'm renting an apartment and I think it's much easier this way. I would really appreciate a description of yourself so I can make an idea who will rent the place. How many people will stay in the apartment, where do you work, how long are you planning to stay in the apartment. I don't have time to waste so please reply me ONLY if you are really interested. Thank you for your time! Regards, Olivia Esther and David Mirk" I replied: "Good day. Thanks for reaching out to me regarding your apartment for rent. I'm a 52 year old man who works full time at the hospital. I've worked at the hospital for about 19 years. I am a volunteer at a local organisation. I try to stay in shape by running and riding my bike. I enjoy being outside. I am a non smoker and I am a quiet person. Recently the new building owner here, as of May 2018 recently issued eviction notices to all the tenants on the basis of doing renovations/ I would have stayed here, but obviously cannot. i am hoping to find a place that i can stay in for a few years. I live alone. Thanks for reading my email. Enjoy your day." Olivia Esther wrote back to me again: "Hi again Mike. TripAdvisor (www.tripadvisor.com/rentals) is the property management company that will make all the necessary arrangements for you to view the apartment before signing the lease agreement and sending the payment to me as a landlord. I will cover the transaction and delivery fees. I can proceed with the rental transaction ONLY if you agree with the terms and conditions of TripAdvisor provided below. It's a first time for me doing a transaction like this so I will explain you everything below so we can avoid any misunderstanding I NEED TO BE SURE THAT EVERYTHING IS CLEAR FOR YOU SO PLEASE READ CAREFULLY ALL THE STEPS OF THE TRANSACTION BECAUSE I CAN NOT CHANGE THEIR TERMS AND CONDITIONS. ALSO I WILL PAY FOR THE TRANSACTION AND DELIVERY FEES AND JUST IN CASE YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND I WILL NOT RECEIVE A REFUND FROM TRIPADVISOR! TripAdvisor are already in custody of the keys and all the necessary documents. The ownership is already confirmed with the building management from Canada and also with a Real Estate Professional Department in London, United Kingdom. They just need my approval and your information so they can proceed with the transaction. I AM ALREADY REGISTERED WITH THEM AS A LANDLORD SO THERE IS NO NEED FOR YOU TO REGISTER ON THEIR WEBSITE AS THEY WILL CONTACT YOU AFTER MY APPROVAL. -You need to provide me your contact details: full name, mailing address (street, number, city and postal code), cell phone number, move-in date and duration of lease preferred (e.g. 6 months or 1 year rental contract with option of renewal). The lease agreement will be a standard one from the Canadian government. - I will inform TripAdvisor that I approve the rental transaction. - TripAdvisor will send you a notification(via email) with the transaction details, delivery details and payment information - You need to send the amount of 1300$( first month of rent from contract -925CAD and damage deposit -375CAD - refundable in the last month of rent from contract) to the the TripAdvisor Financial Department, provided to you in the notification. THE PAYMENT NEEDS TO BE SENT WITHIN 24 BUSINESS HOURS AFTER YOU WILL RECEIVE THE TRANSACTION DETAILS OR ELSE THEY WILL CHARGE ME AN ADDITIONAL FEE. - After the payment is completed you need to send the payment details to TripAdvisor. - TripAdvisor will check the payment confirmation and start the shipping procedure through UPS Air Cargo. - You will receive the package (keys, apartment documents and lease agreement) in 4 business days. After the keys will be delivered at your address you will have 5 business days (inspection time) to check the apartment. The inspection time will start from the moment you will be at the building. - If you decide to keep the apartment you just need to sign the lease agreement and TripAdvisor can release the funds to me. If you don`t want to keep the apartment you will receive a full payment refund including any payment fee. Please note that TripAdvisor can NOT release the funds without your approval. You will have full control of the payment. They can release the payment to me as a landlord just after they will receive the lease agreement with your signature. Using TripAdvisor involves three parties: me as owner, you as a potential tenant and TripAdvisor as a responsible third party authorized to handle this transaction. TripAdvisor works the same way as the escrow account on which you place the deposit when you rent an apartment, except that instead of a bank, we use TripAdvisor. I can NOT rent the apartment any other way because the building management has strict rules about renting private properties and they strongly recommend me to use a professional property management company. You can reach my husband David any time at: +44 20 7193 6890 (if you are calling from Canada you need to dial 011-44 20 7193 6890) or you can email me your number and I can ask him to give you a call. Let me know if you have the funds available (1300CAD$) so we can move forward and e-mail me your full information I requested. Thank you! Michael P 11:00 AM (5 hours ago) to oliviaestherb11 HI Olivia, thanks for your reply and detailed instructions. So if i understand this correctly, you want to send money through Trip advisor just to view the apartment. I know you say this seems like a new process to you, but would send someone funds just to view a suite. Can you clarify this for me please. Thanks Mike Olivia Esther 11:20 AM (5 hours ago) to me Mike, TripAdvisor has great services and they are really professional. I can access the funds just after TripAdvisor have your final answer about the transaction. If u refuse to keep the apt you will receive a full refund from them... Also I can NOT change their terms and conditions regarding the rental transaction so I need your confirmation that I can proceed with the transaction according with the steps I've explained you in my last email. Therefore you will see the apartment after you will receive the keys. Thank you for understanding!"

I have gotten multiple calls from multiple numbers from Delaware, OH saying they’re calling from a recorded line and their name is Joe from TripAdvisor. I block the number everyday and continue to keep getting a new number calling me each day.

I am a realtor and my cell phone is my business phone. I receive calls all the time from unknown individuals so it's not unusual for me to answer a number I don't recognize. They said they were from Tripadvisor, I asked who are you from? They then said "Can you hear me?" I answered yes, then they hung up

- Colorado Springs, CO, USA

1. I received a cell phone call from from a local number and a woman who said that she was TripAdvisor.

2. The person asked, "Can you hear me?" I replied, "Yes."

3. Then they played a recorded message about trip offers. I realized that it didn't seem right and I hung up. I was worried because I had said, Yes."

4. I called back the number on my caller ID. It was a man who had NOT called me, and who was not in anyway connected with the call. His telephone number had been spoofed.

5. I am concerned because of all the recent data breaches. The scammers might have hacked my account numbers and other personal information. Now, they also have a recording of me saying, "Yes".

6. I do not know if I will lose money due to this.

- Pittsburgh, PA, USA

Asking to say yes

- Traverse City, MI, USA

Woman claimed to be TripAdvisor. Asked if I could hear her. I was distracted. Answered yes. I hung up immediately, but probably too late! Just happened today.

- Sacramento, CA, USA

I received a call from this number, said Hello. The man on the line said "Hi, this is Jared, I'm a trip advisor on a recorded line. Can you hear me okay?" I asked 'Who are you', and the line went silent.

It just happened, so I'm not sure if any money was charged.

- Rockwood, TN, USA

They call several times a day announcing themselves as TripAdvisor and using the "can you hear me?" bait

- Mocksville, NC, USA

The man simply told me his name which I don't recall and said the call was being recorded. He asked if I could hear him ok? I said yes. He said he was from Trip Advisor and they were looking to fill in used cabins and I hung up. I immediately started searching the Internet because I recall hearing something about a scam with the callers asking if you can hear them ok.

- Olive Branch, MS, USA

Caller claimed to be from Trip Advisor and since i had recently been looking at trips I wasn't thinking and answered "YES" to a "Can you hear me?"

- Wichita, KS, USA

Scammer asked if I can hear him. To which I answered "yes". He then proceeded to offer me luxury cruise vacation. I declined and he hung up.

- West Lafayette, IN, USA

Phone rings and saying - I am ?? from ?? calling on recorded line. Can you hear me ok?

I have been receiving calls from many of these numbers, at least twice a day.Every time number is different, but the 1st 3 digits are same as my number.

- El Paso, TX, USA

I did an inquiry for a property rental in Playa del Carmen, Mexico thru TripAdvisor. This is the link: http://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentalReview-g150812-d6406283-Luxury_Villa_6_... />
They answered me from the email [email protected] and identify themselves as the owner of the property. It had my inquiry done thru trip advisor at the end of the email. They sent me a contract with terms and They gave me an account number in the UK to pay. I did a wire transfer back in August for $10,400 to find out it last week that it was a scam. I was able to speak with real owner and she says she doesnt have an account in England and propertu is booked by somebody else. HSe said her email was hacked trhu vacation rentals or TrtipAdvisor. Tripadvisor has been hacked and emails are getting to the hackers. I tried to contact them and file a complaint, but they didnt take it seriously. Googling the matter I saw there are others that have been hacked in the same way, with same email.
