I had a few email exchanges with someone I thought was legitimately interested in buying a motorcycle from me. They asked for another vin report and I very stupidly following the link and added my credit card number

- South Park, PA, USA

I'm selling a motorcycle on Craigslist and received an inquiry from a "buyer". They used the name Seth Nunez. Transcript:

Buyer: Hello,

I hope you’re still selling this suzuki . Did you have any mechanical issues with it?

Me: None whatsoever. It was very reliable while I was still riding it.

Buyer: That sounds great. How's the engine working? Do you have a VIN report that I can see?

Me: As stated in the ad, it ran last in the fall of 2017 and started fine. I don't have a working battery so I can't start it at the moment. I'll have to wait until I get home from work to get you the VIN, I'm working nights at the moment. As for the report, I'll leave that up to you since I will not be purchasing one.

Me: Here's the VIN (VIN Redacted)

Buyer: Thanks for sending me vin but I don't want to obtain a report myself because I’ll just lose money if it's not clean. I'd like if you send me one from (Website URL hyperlink). It does not make sense me to pull it but you could still give it to another interested person.

Looking forward to hear from you soon, Seth

I researched the website link and discovered the scam. Their website is not listed as approved by vehiclehistory.gov

- Williamstown, NJ, USA

Name that came up is Justin Turnage.

I have a Motorcycle for sale on Craigslist. This person responded to me requesting a vehicle history, and suggested I use vininsights.com to save money. Of course I thought it may be a scam, and figured a history report since I am trying to sell the vehicle, I can use a report. BUT, I used Autocheck just in case it was a scam. I sent him the Autocheck, and he said

"Thank you for sending me autocheck but they are not accurate because I’ve had bad experience (my brother had accident with his bike and that one didn’t show it at all). They are really expensive and they are showing only what seller want to see. I would appreciate if you can pull the report from the company whose website I already sent you because they are precise and I trust only them. I am very interested in your bike and I already prepared cash, so the only thing I am waiting now is that report."

That confirmed that it was a scam.
