I was looking for a job and found a job posting for an open "part-time bookkeeper/accounting rep" position through my college's job board site online. Since I am working towards an accounting degree, I thought that this is the opportunity I was looking for. With a pay rate of $20 - $25 per hour for working 5 - 12 hours per week, I was excited to work for them. I emailed my resume and cover letter to the email address indicated on the job post. More than a week later, I got a response explaining what the company was, what the position responsibilities and requirements were, and a request to fill out a short application to let them know I was still interested in the position. The parts of the email that caught my eye were the inconsistency of the position information. The position was to be for 5 - 10 hours per week with a compensation of $21.40 - $25 per hour while working a minimum of 10 - 12 hours per week. In the original job post, the location of the position was in my city, but in the email, it was stated to be a virtual position that could be done from home. It was odd because why would a position that deals with a company's finances be done on a home PC? Still desperate for a job, I filled out the short application form by stating my full name, address, city, state, zip code, age, home and cell number, and availability dates. Almost a week later, I receive a reply saying my application was processed successfully, a confirmation letter from HQ was attached, and a request to confirm that I have successfully received the email. The confirmation letter did not have my name on it (only a candidate ID containing letters and numbers), but it did have their company logo at the top, which was out of focus and stretched out to fill the top of the page. I did not trust that at all so I did not reply. Two days later, I got a reminder email asking if I received that previous email as well as if I was still interested in the position. I did finally get a job at that time so I replied saying I would like to decline the offer. I then receive a text message, which was different from the phone number listed in the email, saying that I was approved to work for them and my first assignment will be dispatched to my address by the upcoming Monday. It also requested for me to reply with "MESSAGE RECEIVED" along with my full name to confirm the receipt of the message. I just ignored it because why would I do that if I never had any type of interview with them and provided the appropriate documents stating I am able to work legally. A little bit more that a week later, I received another text saying a package containing my payment was delivered to my home and to confirm that I received it by replying with "PAYMENT RECEIVED" along with my full name. Sure enough I received a package with the sender information being completely different from the person (K. CROOZ TONY) I have been emailing (Christopher Good) and an address I have never seen before (*** *** *** *** *** *** ** ***). Inside the package was a cashier's check from the State Employees' Credit Union for $2,450 with the "remitter" named as Roland Thompson. I have not cashed it into my bank account because the transaction might give access of my account to someone I don't know. This is the first time I have experienced this, and I am not sure of what to do next. I just don't want other people to fall for this too.
