Potential breach of information and scam! I was contacted twice by a fraudulent scammer claiming to be a patient advocate for United Health Care. He called from Deluth, MN (218 461-3026) yesterday and wanted to “help me get more from my insurance - i.e. lower drug prices and more money from social security! He asked me to confirm my dob and I suspiciously answered “why don’t you tell me what you have and I will confirm it. He relied they weren’t allowed to divulge that information so I said “well if I were to tell you my Dob was (gave home a phony one) would you agree with it? And he said, “yes, that corresponds with our information. I immediately hung up. Today, a woman (again with an East Indian accent) called from the same number and asked for my mother, by name. I told her that I was on file with the insurance company as power of attorney for my mom and was handling all her affairs because she has pancreatic cancer. She “checked” and couldn’t find that information. So again asked for my moms phone number. I asked her if it was important and she said yes “we can save her money) blah, blah, blah -same spiel as the man that called me previously used. I called the number back and the same man that had called me before answered! I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told one wasn’t available right now. So I questioned him about who he was with and he said “United Health Care”. I asked what department and he said patient advocate dept. He told me that I could look on the back of my insurance card and call the number and ask if they had a patient advocate dept. I did and she agreed that United Health Care does have such a dept. I still felt something was off so she pursued it further and checked the phone number and it absolutely was not their dept. number and she found that multiple complaints had been filed about this number. She went on to tell me that these scammers have been targeting the Boise, Idaho area asked for the persons dob, address and member ID number. They then call United Health care and cancel their policy and set them up with another insurance company and then call the person back and tell them they owe this new company x amount of dollars for procedures not covered. United Health Care put through a fraud report for me and I called the attorney generals office and reported it. They also asked me (and I did) to report it to the BBB, the Federal Trade Commission and the Dept of Insurance. I also called a local television reporter and was told that they only let the public know about cases that have been referred by the ScamPulse.com and/or attorney generals office.
