- Starkville, MS, USA

Saw an email ad for Mississippi Power Payback Program (cleanenergyassociation.org). Being a ".org" extension, I clicked on it. This led me to scheduling an appointment (had to enter my name, address, highest electric bill cost). Got a call back very quickly (from an no caller ID number and on a Saturday morning no less) to confirm the appointment. Caller (Ben) asked if I was the homeowner, how long I intended to live in the house, as well as my credit score. He also asked me to send the first two pages of my utility bill ahead of the meeting.

After I hung up, "Ben" texted me the following:

"Hello Bob this is Ben. It was nice chatting with you. Every solar system is different. The reason we ask for your bill ahead of time is that it allows us to do our homework and be prepared with numbers when we call. This will save 30 minutes off your appointment length. Please send the first 2 pages (all 4 corners) of your electric bill which will show us your annual kilowatt hour usage. This is how we properly size your system. Thank you"

At that point, I had remembered that I had a scheduling conflict (son's kickball game Monday evening) -- plus I was a little suspicious. Went to the actual cleanenergyassociation.org website and saw that it was essentially nothing. Texted "Ben" back about the scheduling conflict, then called him almost immediately. He picked up and said he had received my text and was looking at other appointment times. I expressed my misgivings -- curious to know why he was calling from a Phoenix area code. He said that he currently lived in Chicago, but had his old phone from when he lived in Phoenix. I then asked why someone in Chicago was selling solar systems in Mississippi. He then said that he was the marketing manager, and that he worked with contractors in Illinois, Indiana and Mississippi. I then asked why he needed to know my credit score. He said because this is not a free program -- needed to establish that I'd be able to afford the system. He told me he would email me additional information about the company and told me that he had another meeting that he had to get to (again -- this is on a Saturday morning). I told him that I had my misgivings and he hung up on me. The confirmed to me that it was a scam. I tried to call back almost immediately and the number came up as "disconnected."
