credit updates Reports & Reviews (8)

A disreputable credit checking service, CreditUpdates.com, fraudulently hi-jacked a Craigslist apartment posting to compel the disclosure of sensitive personal information (name, birth date, social security #, credit history & rating, private financial accounts & institutions) to use for identity theft. Please see compounded and irrefutable evidence provided in the attached pdf-file. PLEASE investigate this case, it could have destroyed me and my 79-year-old father, who also fell prey to this scam. With the exception of my name and my father's name, all information provided in the attached file is accurate and re-traceable. Thank you!

Credit Updates is posting multiple fake Craigslist ads for Los Angeles area home/apartment rentals that are in fact unavailable to rent. These postings appear legitimate at first glance because they provide unique photos and neighborhood descriptions (probably ripped from websites like Redfin) and are also priced competitively. This is done to entice consumers to pay money for credit reports, with no possibility of actually renting the property listed. I verified this by responding to two different ads in the local area over the last few days and receiving the same phony story in the body of the e-mail, both linking to Creditupdates.com. See attached documentation.

I emailed to see an apartment. Below is the email exchange.

Hello Cansu,

Thank you for your interest in the property listed for rent. You were the second to reach out from the ad. The first prospective renter no longer had to move because of his home situation. So we give the opportunity to you. We just completed all new renovations and are now ready to lease with flexible terms. We will work with you on move in date, lease security deposit and length.

I know you desire the precise address of the property but my husband does not want me divulge due to safety reasons. We have had a string of break-ins, squatters and thefts at our other properties. We would like to avoid that with this property because of the renovations that have cost plenty of money. You will be the first to move in with the renovations. That is why we want to confirm you have your updated report before we arrange a tour.

All utilities are priced into the lease along with garage parking spaces. The appliances in the kitchen as well as laundry room were just installed. You have the option to pick your paint color and flooring before your arrival

If you want us to schedule you for a tour, then please visit the link below and get your report. We use this site since it's it gives you 3 scores. Just fill out the form and indicate that you want the report. We are not concerned with any negative report items, it's more of a formality to ensure you have rental history. Simply get your report by CLICKING HERE (https://www.creditupdates.com/lp/fcs11?sv=231&sc=35&lpid=49&tid=147... />
Keep in mind that you only have to bring your report to the tour. Once you let me know that you have your report ready, then I can personally schedule a walk through of the place.

Thanks again,

Bettye

I responded to an ad on craigslist for an apartment in my area being rented out. I was contacted from someone stating that i needed to get my credit score through credit updates.com because that was the only type of score they took and once they received my three part score i would be aloud to look at the apartment. I signed up for their $1 free trial that stated nothing about being charged 29.94 after a 7 day trial was up. When i signed up for the $1 dollar trial it only gave me one score and that if i wanted the other two i would have to pay additional. i went on to email the person that put up this ad that i was skeptical about spending the additional money for a credit score on an apartment I wasn't even sure wasn't a scam. I ended up only doing the free score for $1 dollar yet again there was no indication I was going to be charged after 7 days. The person for the craigslist ad never emailed me back therefor making it obvious it was a scam. I would like a refund of 29.94 the amount they took out of my account for when the "7 day trial" was up.

This company posted a misleading ad on Craigslist for an apartment in Baltimore, MD. When I responded to the ad, I received the response attached below from the "leasing agent." I fell for the scam and though I was using a legitimate credit report website. In the process I gave over far too much personal information. When I went back a few days later after not hearing from "Bella," the website that was linked no longer worked and the Craigslist ad was flagged. Realizing I was a potential target of identity theft, I put a security freeze on all of my credit reports through the 3 major agencies. A week later, my debit account was charged $29.95 for a monthly charge for credit monitoring. However, I never signed up for that. After some internet research, it was clear that the Craigslist ad and this company were linked. When I called customer service to cancel and ask for a refund, they simply repeated the same 3 sentences about me having to have completed a registration process to enroll. I demanded to speak with a supervisor who kept repeating these statements. After much urging, the supervisor claims he cancelled my "membership" but said he would not refund the initial charge. It is clear that this is a scam and a farce set up to take advantage of unassuming people looking for apartments.

Was looking for a property to rent on Craigslist. Got a generic response prompting me to go to a website to enter in personal information so that a credit score could be obtained. I emailed the address back informing him or her that this was not feasible as of yet because I did not have sufficient information. Did some research and it turns out this is a scam that tries to get people to enter in their credit score so that a social security number could be obtained. Their intention here is fraudulent and I hope that the respective information will get the respective people to answer to the letter of the law. I have sent an email to [email protected] with the information that was sent to me.

Their scam site is https://www.creditupdates.com and they’re distributing fake Craigslist listings to lure people into signing up for this site.
