An automated phone call stating "This is Josh from the service department; can you hear me okay?"

I receive a call daily from numbers in the Maryland/Virginia area that are robocalls that start out "Hi, this is Josh from the customer service department, can you hear me okay?". Then he goes on into a spiel about how I've been picked for some free hotel rooms or whatever.

- Stacy, MN, USA

Caller in what initially sounded like a live voice said he was from the "Customer Service Department" and asked if I could hear him OK? I was expecting a call from someone I have not spoken to often and could not hear very well so I said "Yes" only to instantly regret saying it as the follow up voice sounded automated. I quickly hung up.

Call received from recording. The recording didn't mention a business name, just that they were with the "customer service department." The recording was loud and clear, but the male voice asked me if I could hear him. I said no and disconnected the call.

- Ladera Ranch, CA, USA

I received the "Can you hear me?" phone scam. The caller or automated recording started with: "Hi my name is John and I'm calling from the Customer Service Department.......Can you hear me?" I've researched that if you reply "yes" they store your response and use it for fraudulent charges that they say you've consented to. The fact that they have the "yes" response is used against you if you try to dispute the charges. I hung up immediately without responding to the question.
