I missed a call from "Maria Tores" (928.423.9068) and had a voicemail. She asked whether I got the recent email regarding my federal student loans (there was a mass email sent out for PSLF by the Federal Student Loan Servicing company). She wanted to make sure that I maintained my pre-qualification status for forgiveness and possible loan discharge. She wanted to go over said details with me and asked me to call back 855.917.0655. It seemed a little odd, so I initially thought to call the number back directly from the Federal Loan website (I should have done that - always do that). I googled 855 and it came up as one of the FCC approved toll free numbers, which made me feel better so I called them back via the 855 number. I got a recorded intro message that said "You've reached enrollment services, it looks like our processing center reached out to you to expedite your call. If you have over $5k in student loans, press 1. If you have under that amount and or want to be placed on our do not call list, press 9." I was then connected with a guy. I explained I was returning a call from Maria. He said she wasn't there, which is why it was forwarded to him. I explained what the voicemail said. He proceeded to explain to me that I could qualify for $0 repayment and possibly full forgiveness but he needed to pull up my account. He ended up asking for some basic info - I think my DOB. He sent me an access code which he asked me to give to him. Never do this. Representatives do not ask for codes over the phone. But I gave it to him. It came through as FSA and the code. I didn't recognize what FSA was. I was suspicious the whole time but decided to wait it out a little to see what came of it. He asked what my gross income was, which I gave him a round-about number. He asked for how long I've worked for my current job, which again, I gave him a round-about. He said he grew up in the same state I did and told me which HS he went to. I told him what town I grew up in, but did not specific what school I went to (it's a huge city). The whole time he is talking as if he is gathering information, not as though he could see the information I already knew. I know that I've never qualified for $0 repayment and I am not yet qualified to get full forgiveness, so it was super fishy that he was "tabulating" my information to see what I qualified for. I decided to just hang-up on him. He tried calling me back and this call came from 619.942.5449 (Chula Vista, CA). I didn't answer and he didn't leave a message. By this point, I had looked at my email and saw that he had changed my Federal Student Aid password (ie. FASFA) and utilized a repayment estimator calculator within FSA. I haven't touched my FSA account in many years, so I didn't realize that was the account he was referencing. I thought Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) - I called my husband and had him change this password. However, once I realized it was FSA, I changed my password there... presumably the same way he did, with the "forgot password" function and the text code. He then text me from the Chula Vista number with a screenshot of the $0 repayment. I responded "Awesome!" to try to bait him, so I could see if he needed more information from me or if he had gotten what he was trying to get. He then tried to call me again and I didn't answer, so then he text me that all we need to do now is submit my application to get final approval from the Department of Education. I responded no, and stay out of my FSA account with a middle finger emoji. He has not contacted me since. I put a red flag on my credit, changed my password again, changed my security questions, reported this to FSA, reported this to their fraud group, reported this to The Federal Trade Commission, set-up a block with my local social security office so an online account cannot be set-up, gave my bank a heads-up and my family, in case they somehow connect to and try to fraud them. I don't believe he got far enough to get anything of real value. Fingers crossed. This happened yesterday; however, I tried calling the 855 number again today and it's still working and giving the recorded message.
