I called the HP support line that was listed on the HP website. A support tech was going to help me fix my HP printer that was not working. He accessed my computer remotely. At one point, he asked for a credit card number to charge me $4.50 for a patch for my device, as the online tools that he was using didn’t work. I gave him my Discover credit card number. Shortly after that, I received a text message on my phone from Discover, asking if I had agreed to a $100 purchase at Best Buy. About 10 minutes later, I received another text from USAA Visa card, asking if I had authorized a $50 purchase at Amazon. I called each company back and canceled the cards. I was assured that the purchases would be canceled. The HP fellow suggested that I pay him with PayPal, but I don’t have an account. He said he would call me back later. I unplugged my computer and brought it to a local computer place where they removed the software that the HP guy put on there. I also found that he had deleted messages from my email that informed me of the credit card purchases.
