I am classifying this as a scam as the company in question, Move Smart, does not represent themselves honestly.

They are Moving Brokers. They are not the Actual Movers, nor do they employ movers of your own.

Based upon my experience, and the experience of over 150 complaints here at BBB, this is the typical encounter.

1 - You call them based upon their website and discuss the move you wish to do. During that discussion, after listening to what you want to move, they will give you an estimate. That estimate will be for X square feet of movable items, including furniture and boxes. They will then ask you for a deposit so that you can ensure your move.

2 - They will agree upon a date, and they will stress that the date can be flexible. They don't stress HOW flexible the date can be.

3 - They pressure you for the deposit. Once you give them the deposit, you have 72 hours to cancel. This is important. 72 hours. After that, they are pretty much free to do what they want as long as they appear to try to take care of your service.

4 - They reach out to a series of somewhat disreputable movers. Move Smart are brokers. They don't do the move themselves. They simply hook you, and then hand you off to someone else. I suspect that the movers never see a single dime of the deposit, and that is when item 6 comes in. Remember they (Move Smart) did an inventory with you and contracted for X square feet of furniture and boxes. Remember that. Move Smart contracted... not the mover.

5 - On the day of the move that Move Smart told you, the movers don't arrive. At least they don't until you call Move Smart, complain, freak out, and or otherwise let them know that you are dissatisfied. At that point they jump on phones and frantically call all of their disreputable movers until they find one that will take your move. Typically that means that they don't show up until the next day. Or the day after that. Of course by this time, it is long past 72 hours, and you can't cancel the move without losing your deposit. So... since you don't want to lose money, you wait. (This is part 1 of "the hook". Wait for it... )

6 - Moving Day. The movers arrive and one, the foreperson, will take charge. They have a large sheath of official looking papers and sit down with you to discuss your move. They walk through your house and inventory all of the things that Move Smart already did on the phone.

Then... they tell you, quite bluntly, that Move Smart screwed up and under estimated your move. Your square footage that you have already put a deposit on is completely wrong AND... it will cost at least double what you were told. Additionally, they will explain that they are on a tight schedule, with more moves to pick up, and you have to make a decision right then and there... Pay the additional money, typically at least a Thousand more than what you thought you were going to pay, or cancel the whole thing.

If you cancel... you lose your deposit, and have to frantically find someone else, or something else, to move you.

If you agree... they will not lift a single finger until you pay them not only part of what you were owing Move Smart (you paid a deposit, now you are supposed to pay half of the rest of the move) PLUS what the mover is overcharging you.

In my case, I was supposed to completely move for $3500. We paid a $1000 deposit and were supposed to pay $1250 on pick up, $1250 on delivery (approximates). The mover charged an additional $800 dollars to up our square footage and took down and inventory of what they were going to take, furniture AND boxes.

7 - Now the moving begins. They take your stuff, and put it on the truck. At SOME POINT during the move, the foreperson will vanish to the truck. Then the lone person left quickly grabs their tools and such, tells you that you have met your square footage and they are done. Then they rush off to the truck and leave you in stunned silence. Note, typically they have taken half or less of what they promised they would take and that you paid additional money for.

8 - Stunned and Scrambling - Now you have a house that is filled with stuff that you THOUGHT they were going to move. Right? In our case, we had to rent a uhaul, find a 10x15 storage area, and quickly, in one night, dump everything else that we owned into that Storage Shed. Cost, an additional $700 dollars (to date).

9 - The Long Wait - Now comes the fun. The mover told you that they would be at your house in about 5 days or so. After five days of wondering where your stuff is, you call Move Smart. First, you look on their website though so that you can examine your contract and validate some things. But, your contract is gone. There is a nice "Congrats on your MOVE!" message, and you never, ever see your contract again. Funny how that worked....

First, you can never get a hold of Move Smart. They don't respond to messages that you leave them, text messages, or anything. You cannot go to their office in Boca Raton because they have moved out of it and it is abandoned.

EVENTUALLY, someone blesses you by answering the phone. Thank you Move Smart for your mercy (sarcasm). They inform you that things are taking unusually long and that it can be up to two weeks (or more) before your items are ready to be dropped off.

10 - The Longer Wait - My wife and I are to this point. Calls and Texts have been ignored by Move Smart and we don't know where are stuff is. They picked it up on July 8th, 2021, and we still do not have our items.

I SUSPECT however that this is what will happen next.

A - We will never, ever see our things again.

B - We will get a call one day, more than likely at LEAST 30 days after the move and be told that they are ready to drop our items off. Once they arrive they will explain that since our items were in storage, we will have to pay a storage fee equal to X Days times Y Dollars. Although according to federal law, the max that they can charge us for storage per day is $15 dollars, I am expecting them to ask for $50 a day.

Additionally, they will not even open the back of the truck so that we can inspect our items unless we pay them the storage feel PLUS the balance of what Move Smart was supposed to get. In our case, $1250. If our items are damaged, missing, or possibly even NOT OUR ITEMS, we don't get to know until we pony up the cash.

PAYMENT NOTE - They only take forms of payment that cannot be disputed. They don't like debit cards or checks. Just cash, or Venmo. Funny how that works.

Closing - Move Smart is a scam. They are brokers for thieves and scam artists who will pump you for the maximum amount of money that they can. Please read the ScamPulse.com reviews before you use these people. If they call, if they pressure, if they do anything other than apologize for the suffering that they have caused to countless people, hang up on them.

DO NOT do business with them. Had we read what ScamPulse.com says about them, we never would have.

Moving service that once you pay the down payment will not respond. Moving Address is incorrect and I can not get it corrected. No one answers or responds. Pretty sure this is the scam you pay and they ignore you.

The person from this business Chris Ocean contacted us via e-mail as my youngest daughter was looking to moved to New York City. The person contacted us with their services that they can move my daughter and at cheapest fashion in very quick time. After multiple emails and phone calls with mutual agreement that they are going to pick up the house goods to be moved which included large plasma TV, a marble study table, clothing, bedding, and the entire kitchen equipment Including the Crockery and the utensils, they will pick them up by the 1st to 3rd June. This person Chris Ocean told us that the delivery date would be given to us on the date of the pickup by the driver. The driver came up with a different contract in which he circled the delivery date anywhere within 2-14 business days. Out of 3 choices he had circled 2-14 days. When they presented to my daughter this contract she refused to sign the contract because she stated that this was not what they had discuss the movement of the goods with us as 14 days was too long for the delivery for which we had made the partial payment. The driver told her that this was just a formality and they will be delivering her home good this within 5 days of her requested delivery date. She requested a delivery date of June 6th. Which she was given confirmation that within 5 days would be around 10th or 11th June. It has been so frustrating, we had made the half payment, they have not delivered are belongings, date do not respond to us, a person finally did pick up the phone and was very rude and did not wanted us to call them back. Now we are stuck, my daughter has none of her staff including her clothes. We feel that this business had a predatory approach towards us. They have us now as they were hostage, there is nothing we can do to get our things now. We feel that there practice was very misleading and fraudulent in getting us trapped to commit to them and now we feel betrayed and robbed. This type of business should never be allowed to do business in this country. I will also attempt to file a complaint with the police department at Cook County. We paid them using our Credit card twice. The total value of the home goods they stole is more then 10,000 dollars which does not include the money we paid them from the credit card.

This company took an advance deposit to move a 2 Bdrm/1 Bth apartment on the first floor. Estimated bid the weight 2500 lbs in a 3/4 full truck and then demanded additional money for weight for over 5000 lbs. Wanted additional money for light packing ($1500) when contract states they would do it. Company uses contractors, not employees so there is little to no recourse. Complete bait and switch. Once they have you belongings in the truck it's too late! Do not use this company!!
