I responded to an ad on Craigslist about a sublease in Dallas. The ad was initially for a girl who was leaving her condo for a few months and wanted to get a tenant. When I responded to the ad, a realtor responded to me about the apartment that was for rent and provided me a video of the unit (as I was out of state), provided me his drivers license and realtor license numbers and we arranged for me to rent the apartment on March 1st, 2021. He had me sign a lease for a unit number A17 and arranged for me to wire money through Chase's Zelle Quick Pay to a male tenant who was currently occupying the unit. He even came to me after I'd paid and asked for my SSN which I did not provide; however, he asked for my license which I did photocopy for him as he'd shared his (supposedly). All names used from this person are below. Of course, I should have asked why this was no longer a female tenant but I needed a place to stay for my visit and figured with a realtor, they are dealing with a lot of inventory. I paid the person, confirmed my lease was still on for March 1, arranged to have my car shipped and flew down myself on Feb 28th so that I could pick up my apartment keys on March 1. We'd agreed to meet at 3pm on March 1 for a key hand-off; however, I asked if I could swing by the apartment earlier and my questions were evaded. The responses I did get back from the 'realtor' was to pay for parking ahead of meeting. As I let a friend know of what was going on, she pointed out the unit number seemed strange, so I called the apartment complex to inquire about their unit numbering and they confirmed A17 did not exist. Regardless, I arrived at the apartment complex, let the leasing agents know what had happened and they confirmed I'd been scammed.

I Made contact via Pittsburgh Craigslist and received an email back from Alexander Charles Miller of Alex Platinum Homes with info about the listing (address, amenities and costs); he attached an information sheet re Alexander Platinum Homes). He requested additional information from me including present job, how long will I be staying, etc.). He was offering a “bonanzo/promo package” where you pay for 4 months upfront, and get 2 months free, or pay for 2 months upfront and get one month free.

I provided the information he requested. He gave me more information about the apartment, along with his CA Real Estate License Number. I looked him up on the California Dept. of Real Estate website, and there were no issues. He also attached a video tour of the apartment, and Alex Platinum Homes was a banner on the video. To “assure me I was in safe hands dealing with a legitimate private company”, he sent me a subsequent email attaching an image of his CA driver’s license, his CA certificate for real estate, an image showing he’s a Certified Property Manager, and CA Dept. of Real Estate Broker License. I thanked him for the information and advised I would let him know.

I emailed him and advised him I would like to sublease the apartment, paying for 2 months and getting 1 month free, starting March 1.

He emailed me the rental agreement and gave me the information to wire the money. He advised once he received confirmation of the wire, he would issue me a copy of the rental receipt/invoice that I would use to pick up the keys on my move-in date.

1/19/21

I emailed him the signed Rental Agreement for for Sublets & Temporary Housing. He emailed me back and advised that once he received confirmation of the payment, he would issue a receipt and take the apartment off the market. Some email communication went back and forth regarding payment questions. I asked if I could use Xoom to send the money, and that I needed a recipient address, he provided that to me. He stressed, however, that payment is to be a cash deposit or same day wire transfer. I made a wire transfer in the amount of $2,700 and emailed Alexander the receipt. He emailed me a copy of the payment receipt for $2,700

1/20/21

He emailed me and required that I fill out a Background Check Authorization, which requested all my personal info. (address, DOB, email, credit score, occupation, employer. SS#, DL#, Utility Bill and Voter Registration Card. I emailed him back, providing all requested information.

2/3/21

I emailed him confirming that he would meet me at the property address to give me the keys and asked about parking and WiFi information.

He emailed back confirming that yes, he would be there and provide me the WiFi information.

2/27/21

I emailed Alexander asking what time to meet him on the subsequent move-in day. I received no response and emailed him again. Again, no response. I checked Craigslist and the same ad for the apartment was posted 3 days ago and it’s advertised as available now. The listing is under Pittsburgh Craigslist - Housing - Sublets & Temporary - post ID no. 7282519389.

2/28/21

I emailed him advising that I would meet him at the leasing office at 12:30pm. I went to the apartment leasing office to the address indicated on the rental agreement and spoke with a representative. She advised The Edge does not permit subleasing. She looked up the unit at https://thealexplatinumhomesus.com/ and advised the unit pictures are from stock photos, the square footage is incorrect, and the one bedroom apartments are $2,000/month, not his advertised $900/month, and the unit number listed on the rental agreement does not exist.
