I found a listing on Zumper that showed a 2b, 1ba duplex for rent. The listing was unavailable shortly after, but then I received an email from James Sterba Jr. (with the zumper provided email for initial contact). He stated that he was renting his house out and stated that the listing was removed since he had a potential renter beforehand, but fell through with the background check. We decided to have our friend drive out there to look at the property and he said it looked nice and saw a rental sign in the window. We went ahead with paying the application/background check fees via Walmart2Walmart. He then sent a lease that looked very suspicious. I then decided to search the property to ensure his name was on the paperwork, which it wasn't. It was A2O Properties LLC. When confronted that the paperwork should have the company as the lessor name rather than his personal name he got defensive. I then asked for paperwork with his name on the company letterhead or something to verify he was the owner. He refused again. I also told him I was revising the lease since it was not written properly. He agreed. I sent him a revision of the lease and he then started requesting payment at the time, and that he was sending out the keys. I told him that I wasn't able to right away since I was working. He would be very nice, but when I wasn't willing to pay right away or sign the lease, he seemed to get more defensive. He kept saying he put my name on the house for move in and he was ready to finalize the agreement (doing so before I had even signed a leasing agreement). I then contacted Zumper Support to relay the message and they informed me that they removed it since the listing was not legitimate. Currently filing police reports to prevent this from happening to others.
