On February 27th I attempted to purchase a ResMed Air Mini CPAP machine from Facebook Marketplace. The seller went by the name of Melanie and her profile showed she was located in Tennessee, but was willing to ship the item. I asked for a price estimate in sending the item to Durham North Carolina. The user gave me an estimate and I agreed with the approximate they gave me. We agreed the total would be $348 including the shipping. I agreed to the purchase on February 28th. The user told me that she didn't personally have a Venmo account, but that her brother did and he was the one handling the payment. I couldn't find her brother on Venmo using the email address or profile name that was given. I expressed my concerns to the seller about not finding anything. They sent me a request for the money, but I was still hesitant. I again expressed my concern and requested to do it as a goods and services transaction, but the seller assured me that they would get the item to me without delay. I agreed to proceed. I paid the money and requested they let me know when the item ships. They said they would ship it out after 3pm that day. I didn't hear from them again until I asked the next day if it had been shipped. I was assured that they had shipped it. After about 6 days I inquired to see if they had gotten an estimate of the day it would arrive. I never received a response. I suspected I had been scammed. I clicked on the user profile and it no longer existed. I contacted Venmo customer care on March 8 to file a dispute. The person told me this scammer had multiple reports filed. Venmo declared that they couldn't help me and that I needed to contact the seller myself. I also filed a dispute with my bank, but they also said they couldn't help me and that I needed to contact the seller myself since I authorized the charge.

Just got it. I’m sorry to be difficult, but I’m not feeling comfortable with this transaction considering the money isn’t going directly to you and it shows that your brother has no Venmo friends, also because I couldn’t find him. The only way I am willing to go through with it is with buyer protection on my end. If it charges you I will happily reimburse once I receive the item and inspect it. If this isn’t agreeable I will need to pass. I’ve been burned before and this is too much money for me to lose.
