I was on the internet when I received a pop-up saying my computer had experienced some illegal activities. It was extremely urgent that I call 1-888-829-5571 or my computer would be disabled to protect the internet and there were a ton of laws and statutes that were on the screen as well. I called and talked to a guy with a thick accent and he took over my computer remotely and showed me a bunch of error messages, that had apparently affected my computer for several days/weeks. He stated that I needed a certified level 5 technician to diagnose the damage and repair the issue. He said that he would help me find an online technician unless I wanted to haul all of my equipment to a service center near me. Of course, I don't know where a service center is near me so I agreed to let him help me find one remotely. Within 5 minutes or so, I was now on the phone with Michael Jones (a tech with PC Maple). He said my IP address was corrupt and that he could help get a new one, along with virus protection for all of my other devices. I asked Michael if he were an employee for Microsoft and he said he was. Michael then said he would need to take control of my computer to remove malware/viruses & recommended I purchase one of two plans offered. The first plan was $299 and it provided 3 years of service protection. The other plan was $399 for lifetime protection. Obviously, the lifetime protection was the better deal because there was no expiration date and they would fix and repair my computer for the rest of my life (this should have been a serious red flag). He said that he didn't want to take my credit card because my computer wasn't secure. So, he said he would send a Fed Ex truck to my house the next day to pick up the check. I asked if I could provide a money order and he said a check is better (another red flag). So, he did the work on my computer and within an hour, he was done. I took notes of some of the items that he installed on my computer. But something just didn't sit well after this 'fix' so I started fishing around and that's when I realized that I've been duped. I called my banks and put fraud alerts on my accounts. And I have no intention of passing a check to the Fed Ex person when they arrive at my doorstep. I did send an email to PC Maple telling them that I think they are not a legitimate company and they, in turn, sent a receipt for the services I supposedly received. Afterwards, I restored my computer to a previous date and the icons that were displaying after his 'fix' have disappeared. I also reinstalled Windows and changed all passwords. They (PC Maple) just called me as I'm writing this story but I didn't answer. I will likely block their calls and block them from my email too. I installed Norton on my computer and so far, everything is secure. I will need to keep monitoring to be sure.
