Type of a scam Employment
Type of Scam: Online Job Fraud / Crypto Investment Scam
You were targeted in a sophisticated online job fraud scheme that merged fake employment opportunities with cryptocurrency investment manipulation. Here’s an overview of how the scam unfolded:
Steps in the Scam
1. Initial Contact:
• A recruiter named “Nikol” contacted you via WhatsApp with a seemingly legitimate job offer. She claimed to be associated with a company offering remote work. The recruiter provided vague company details and created a sense of urgency to engage you quickly.
2. Onboarding and Training:
• You were asked to complete “training” tasks by creating an account on a platform and making small deposits in cryptocurrency (e.g., USDC). These deposits were presented as necessary to process tasks or orders.
3. The Illusion of Earnings:
• The platform showed fake profits in your account to make the job seem real. You were told these funds could only be withdrawn after completing further tasks or resetting orders with additional deposits.
4. Special Orders and Increasing Deposits:
• You were introduced to “special orders” that supposedly offered higher profits but required more significant deposits. The scammers claimed your balance was insufficient to proceed and repeatedly pressured you to add more funds.
5. Withdrawal Blockade:
• Each time you attempted to withdraw your earnings, you were told to deposit additional amounts to “unlock” the funds. The scammers used technical jargon and manipulated your sense of progress to keep extracting more money.
6. Reinforcement by “Support”:
• Customer service representatives reinforced the scheme by confirming deposits, providing wallet addresses, and claiming transactions were successful. They created a false sense of legitimacy and trust.
Key Features of the Scam
• Fake Job Offer: The job was a cover to lure you into the scam.
• Crypto Transactions: Cryptocurrency was used because transactions are difficult to reverse and harder to trace.
• Continuous Investment: You were constantly required to deposit more money, with promises of higher returns or unlocking your previous deposits.
• Emotional Manipulation: The scammers built trust through friendly communication, urgency, and fabricated stories about “other successful workers.”
• Blocked Access to Funds: Your earnings were never real, and the withdrawal conditions were designed to ensure you never got your money back.
Outcome
The scammers extracted multiple deposits from you, exploiting your trust and the belief that you were completing legitimate work. Unfortunately, this is a common tactic used by fraudsters in online job and crypto-related scams.
