Called my office at about 2:30pm. Caller told secretary that AEP folks were coming to the church to cut power to change old analog meters to new "Smart" meters. Project directed by the Texas Utility Commission. Told secretary we were notified in mail by AEP in July or August, notifying us of scheduled appointment. We had no knowledge. I was out of the office. Secretary notified me and I called the number at 877-579-2499. Bottom line was that I had about 1/2 hour to go to HEB on Sherwood Way and pay $1468.12 as deposit on new meters. I would also be charge a transaction fee of $17.65 which would be credited to m next bill. Kicker was we had to pay by cash or debit card. We weren't allowed to use a credit card. That's when it got iffy. Told the gentleman (last name was Matthews, at Ext 360). Told him it would take me 15 or 20 minutes to get to HEB. I have him my cell number at his request so he could follow-up. Well, I called the local AEP number. Talked to Becky. She informed me that there were no orders to change meters on any of my 6 meters from the Texas Utility Commission. Also checked AEP on line and found lots of info about AEP scam. Mr Matthes called back. Wanted to know why I hadn't shown up at HEB yet. Told him I was in traffic. Told me I had 15 minutes before power shut off. I then told him that in my 28 years as church Business Manager, no vendor ever directed payment in either cash or debit card. Told him I had decided his call was not legit and hung up. It's about 5pm now and I'm guessing the church still has power. I hope HEB is aware of this scam as some folks may actually take this seriously and go there to make a payment.
