AI call claiming to be grandson in auto accident, broken nose, keep it between ourselves, want to tell his dad in person. Texting while driving too fast, unable to stop. Driver of vehicle rushed to hospital; 6 months pregnant. Now in holding cell. Has public defender named David Rhomo, call at (559) 598-7249. Asked me to repeat Defender's name and phone number. Refer to case # 115-015-1 'Grandson' did not ask for specific dollar amount or action other than to call Rhomo, implying he'd give me instructions. I asked 'grandson' if he was asking me to bail him out, but didn't really answer.
I suspected early on that this was my first AI scam. Not my grandson's phone number (explained by saying he was using borrowed phone), and caller ID showed Washington area code (my grandson lives in Nebraska). A Public Defender would not be assigned at arrest and his phone number also a different Washington area code. 'Grandson' never used his name, didn't use his 'dad's' name, and never called me by name. Voice sounded slightly off with unnatural pauses but attempted to cover up by sounding distressed and tearful. I didn't promise any help but just went along with the call. When I asked for more detail the answers didn't make sense.
