On May 18, I followed up on a classified ad for golden retriever puppies: "AKC Golden Retriever Puppies They are up to date on shots and deworming. For more details on them We accept deposits to hold puppies till later date!!! Call or text at 208-254-6582." He replied as "Nathan" and they had adorable males and females ready to go home - $800/males and $900/females. "We are located in OH and we deliver to all nearby cities and states free of charge." I said we couldn't afford that right now. They replied: "what's your price range - we are more interested in finding them great homes and not the $$" They sent 4 pictures of the puppies. I said we would talk about it and I would get back to them ASAP. I also asked them to prove that this was legitimate. They replied late that afternoon: "Hello, are you there. Been a busy day and we just got back from a delivery trip." I responded "hello." The next afternoon they replied: " Hello are you still interested in the goldens? We are asking $600 each for the last 3." I, again, asked them to establish that this was a legitimate offer. Two hours later they texted: " u there? Was wondering if you are ready to take the puppy home." I replied "I guess I have to ask again - can you prove this is legitimate?!" Their response: "the best way we male our adopting families feel more comfortable during the adopting process is by letting them pay an initial deposit of $100 and the balance on delivery of the puppy." I replied: "Can I get your name please and where in Ohio? Hello? Hello?" The next morning I texted: "Thought so..." The next day they replied: "Hello. Sorry for the late Respond. Are you there? Had an emergency to handle." I said "Yeah." They replied: "So are you still interested?" I said "Prove this is legitimate please." They said: "How do i prove it??" I said "Maybe some references? Give me your name and city?" He said: "Yes we have references but is not proper for us to give you families contact info without their concern. We are in Columbus, OH. I'm Nathaniel Shawski. And you?" I replied: "I am thinking that if you were legitimate, you would be happy to contact people you have "sold" your puppies to and ask to use them as references! If they were truly happy with their "purchase," they would be happy to help! What do you think?!" They replied: "If you read well i said without "their concern". So i need their approval before giving out their contact." I said "RIGHT! So do that!! Hello?" I replied later "U there?" Next day they texted: "Hello are you there?" Last night I texted "Hello? Are you there?" Seriously?!?! Please don't fall for these scamming ads - they prey on people who love puppies during these difficult times.

I googled Nathaniel Shawski in Columbus, OH - no such person. Googled the phone number - it's been used in several of these puppy scams, across the country!! I called our newspaper classifieds department and reported this - they have pulled the ad and red-flagged the number. I wish there was a way to contact papers across the country. Next I will contact the authorities.
