I received a postcard advertising a time limited special discount for checking my furnace and air conditioner. I made an appointment and two representatives came and inspected my two furnaces and the air conditioning unit. They indicated that the air conditioning compressor was pulling too high an amperage and that it need a significant amount of cooling fluid (about 5 lbs). They quoted me a price of several hundred dollars per pound of fluid. The indicated that since the compressor was pulling to high an amperage and that the loss of cooling fluid was due to a leak that it was time to replace the entire air conditioning system. I asked for and got a quotation for $4,848. I was uneasy about the situation, so I called the company that installed (many years ago) the system and who have inspected and serviced the system on a routine basis. A representative came and inspected the compressor and found that the amperage was well below the threshold and that although I needed cooling fluid, it was not a major amount and the replacement cost was about $28/lb. I had this company service the compressor and they added 2.5 lbs of cooling fluid and cleaned the compressor. I am glad that I asked for a second opinion and I did not have to pay for a replacement system.
