Type of a scam Online Purchase
Research: I did some research on the website “All Season Gadget” and they appeared to be legitimate. There were ample positive reviews and a few negative ones. Seemed like a little business run by someone who had found a wholesale price and was passing it on to customers.
Purchase: I bought the $599 graphics card using my Chase Visa card and used an intermediary called “Afterpay” which broke the payments into 4 payments. That worked well because my son is working as a dishwasher and could “keep up the payments”. Initial payment was $150 on Dec 11.
Price Increase: The price of the graphics card I purchased went up from $599 to $999 on the website. Fair enough…I suspect I might get a cancellation on my order. I wouldn’t be too surprised at this point.
Dell Background: The price for the graphics card was low but I worked at Dell Computers for 7 years. The markup on new electronics can easily be 100% so I figured this little shop could be the next Dell Computers. If the price were a mistake, I expected they would send a note, apologize, and refund the money.
Dec 14: Shipping Notification
Tracking: I got a tracking number from All Season Gadget…the graphics card was on its way. 3 days from purchase is about right…so nothing was unusual about this. Estimated arrival time is Dec 20th and given holiday mail that makes sense.
Dec 16: UPS & Package Weight
Tracking from UPS. I checked on the package details from the tracking number and noticed that the package only weighed 2.5 pounds. That is a little light…the graphics card weighs almost 5 pounds and that’s without packaging. I was worried something was wrong so I called UPS.
UPS Service. I talked with UPS about the package and the confirmed that it was going to Arvada but it was not coming to my home. The package with the tracking number I had been given was going to someone with a different name and different address in Arvada, CO. Given the wrong weight…it was probably something completely different and not a graphics card at all.
UPS & Investigation. There was zero interest or seeming ability for UPS to investigate what had happened. It’s pretty clear that fraud was taking place but there was no mechanism for UPS to get involved. It’s understandable because they deliver packages…they aren’t in the business of investigations.
All Season Gadget. I reach out to them via phone, email, and their website portal asking to check the tracking number I have been given. I get no response.
All Season Gadget Reviews. If you look up the website, you will see lots of bad reviews. Clearly a lot of other customers have not been getting their packages either. However, a week before…everything reported was great. All the perpetrators need to do is create another website, pump up the high-quality reviews, and switch their operations over to there. The reality is that they are probably already setting up a dozen or more fraudulent sites so they can get a web history going on the positive reviews.
Dec 16: Chase Bank
Credit Card Use. I had used my credit card to establish the payment process. This way my son owes me and so I called Chase Bank and they set up a dispute for the package; however, they can’t do anything more until the package does not arrive.
Vendor negotiations. Chase recommends I contact the vendor to make sure the tracking number is correct.
Afterpay. Chase points out that Afterpay has also paid the vendor in full and suggests that I engage Afterpay as well.
Dec 16: Afterpay
I contact Afterpay and submit a trouble ticket. They have a 3 day “service level agreement” which makes sense; however, this slows down their ability to respond as well. They are at risk of not getting subsequent payments from Chase Bank and have likely paid All Season Gadget $599 while they have only received $150 so far. This is a high risk game for them as well unless they have colluded with All Season Gadget.
Dec 16: FTC
I submitted a ticket to the FTC.
Dec 17: Package Arrival
Someone in Arvada received a 2.5 pound package from UPS. It wasn’t me but we knew that already thanks to the conversation with UPS. However, there was no picture available of delivery…no confirmation of address or name on the package. If I hadn’t called UPS it would be easy to believe that the package had been stolen from my porch. I suspect this is the run-around that All Season Gadget had expected their customers to make. They could claim that they shipped the package and it must have been lost.
