I responded to an ad on Craigslist for a House for Rent. The ad included a picture of the house, the rent, the features, and a phone number. I texted the number and they sent me an online rental application. I filled it out including a picture of my license (front and back) and my social security number. I notified them that I had submitted the application and to let me know my status as soon as possible. The next day, I was approved. They sent me a text message saying so. It contained a green check mark emoji which did seem odd. But I didn't question it anymore. The next step was to secure the property with a deposit of $600. They requested the money via Venmo or Pre-paid MasterCard. I told them that I would have the money the next day. They said that the property was first come, first served. I contacted them the next day and asked for their Venmo handle or a screenshot of their QRL code. They provided the following: [email protected] Pin 1165 and requested a screenshot of the payment being successful. After several attempts to send the money through that email and through the phone number I was texting, he then said to try Shawanda Mike saying that was his wife's tag. I sent several screenshots of the "We couldn't find any matches" from Venmo. He gave me the email again. He also gave me the following phone number to try saying that it belonged to his wife: 912-650-1165. More "we couldn't find any matches" messages. I called the number I was texting: 409-313-9712 and it went to an automated voicemail message. He kept texting: "I am a private landlord, and I take over the property from my wife..." I asked him who his local property manager was, and he continued to repeat that he was a private landlord. I had a bad feeling after all of this back and forth. I texted that I was no longer interested in the property. They got away with my time, hope for a reasonable place to live, my social, and my license.
