Total money lost $199.99
Type of a scam Tech Support
When I landed on www.tumbex.com/tumblr instead of Tumblr (and didn't immediately realize it), I got a pop-up screen with a Windows logo indicating that I may have been infected with a Trojan virus. It said that if I turned off my computer or tried to get rid of the problem manually, I could lose my information and that an important file--which I am unable to remember--can not be found. This file, if lost, would crash the system and I should contact tech support to remove the virus and all damage to the system.
I called 1-877-752-6508 and talked to George, who spoke in very broken English. I should have noticed that he didn't announce that he was from Windows Tech Support--and didn't him say he way from another company-- and call him on it. I told him about the warning of the Trojan virus, he had me push and hold the "Windows" key and "r" key and go into the "run" function. I entered
"iexplore -extoff", he had me go to https://secure.logmeinrescue.com/Customer/Code.aspx and entered a six-digit code.
Here, he asked me to give him control of the computer keyboard--which I did. At this website, he showed me a list of log-in activity that included IP addresses that started with 80., which is consistent with Germany. Since he had control of the keyboard, I have no idea if he used information that was accurate to hook me in to sell me something that I didn't need under the name of "Windows" to do a bait-and-switch.
Then the request for money came up:
1 year of tech support $149.99
2 years of tech support $199.99
4 years of tech support $299.99
6 years of tech support $399.99
Lifetime tech support $499.99
Still thinking it was Windows, I said two years, when they said I could use the $199.99 toward the lifetime tech support amount. When alpkey came into the picture--only when the business forms for payment, electronic signatures, registration, etc. became necessary--I still naively believed they were a contractor for Windows. That was until I got back online and did a search for alpkey and one of the first things to be suggested was "alpkey scam."
Now, I feel like a fool and am out $199.99 that I can't afford to throw away. I'm going to try to get my money back, and if I can't get it back from the company, stop it from the credit card company.
