I got a call saying I was picked to receive a "loyalty grant" from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. I asked why (because I knew I never applied for one) and he said that they had done a demographic survey in my area and had selected 1000 people who met certain criteria to receive the grant. I was given a grant approval # AMD64, and a call back number of 1-408-560-1716. He said that I could select one of three payment options, and that for one of them I could go to Walmart and wire $250 via MoneyGram to him in order to secure the grant, but I only had 30 minutes to do so. I asked him why he couldn't just take it out of the grant, and he laughed and said he wasn't authorized. I told him I gave my permission to do so and he kept saying it didn't work like that, that I had to wire him the money first.

I called the number he gave me (it was different from his) and I spoke with a woman, and asked if it was a scam. She got really angry and asked why I bothered to even call back. I hung up and called the first guy back, and asked to speak with his manager. He got really quiet then said, "I am the manager." He couldn't even tell me the name of the agency he was employed by, so I told him I knew it was a scam, and hung up.

He had my email. address. number. I called ScamPulse.com right after and they suggested that I register on the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov.
