Type of a scam Phishing
She asked for my age and occupation, which is public record so I gave it to her. She then asked me a "survey" question and asked which credit card I had the best customer service experience with. I told her Discover. She said she would transfer me to her supervisor to cancel the magazines.
I got to the supervisor, named James, and he said that he could cancel the magazines in the future, but I would still be billed for this month. I told him that was strange, since I had never been billed for any magazines. He asked for my "Discover bank card" number, where he claimed it would be billed, to confirm.
I refused to provide payment info, and asked what the number was. He said that only the billing department would know that. When I asked for the name of his company again, he seemed to get frustrated and would only give vague answers as to who they represent. When I refused to provide any more information, he said they would send me cancellation materials or something and we hung up.
Since this seemed to sketchy, I called the number that had called me. The girl Shay answered again, and knew my name. I asked again the name of her company, and told her that the conversation I had with her floor manager seemed fishy. She abruptly said she would transfer me, and then hung up. When I tried to call the number again (only moments later), it had been disconnected.
I'm not all that worried since I only gave out my job title and age, but I'm sure this is a phishing scam and I hope that these people get called out. I also hope they stop sending me stupid magazines that I don't want to read.
