Type of a scam Tech Support
I called and they offered to "fix" my computer and check out any errors for $99.00. We set up a password and gave them remote access. After a few hours, the tech called on my home phone (I gave them the number) to say my computer was "fixed." Then, they talked me into buying a lifetime package for $399.00 for virus protection and technical support. Every 6 months or so, a tech would call me telling me it was time to update my computer and check for any problems. This went on for a couple of years with no problems.
Then, on January 19, 2018, a technician called me saying he was from American Technology. He gave the password and I gave him remote access. After a few hours, as usual, the tech, Justin, phoned me saying that the virus protection had been removed and there were a couple of minor problems. He said that they would need to charge another $399.00 to reinstall but, not to worry, they would immediately refund the money. He told me that because I had a lifetime plan there was no charge but the charge/refund was necessary to get the computer fixed.
Of course, they charged me$399.00 but there was no refund. The charge ticket on PayPal was listed as MPS: MBSolutions. When I called the number, an automated voice identified it as a Staffing Solutions Company. I called and left numerous messages but no one ever returned my calls.
I called the number I had for American Technology and talked to Josh, a tech I had talked to before. I explained the situation. He apologized and told me Justin had left the company and they were having trouble with customers being scammed by a bogus company. I offered to go in re-install the virus protection correctly and the American Tech icon on my desktop.
Because I initiated a dispute with PayPal, they wanted a letter from American Technology. When I tried to contact American Technology, the phone number would only ring and ring or have a busy signal. I tried to contact them via clicking the icon. No one ever contacted me. I have concluded that they were in collusion with the other "tech" who called me and both are scammers.
Because I cannot get anything from "American Technology" PayPal is reluctant to give me a credit for the $399.00. So I am probably out that money.
