Anne Hathaway Club Reports & Reviews (1)

I'm reporting on behalf of my father. He was scammed by someone pretending to be the actress Anne Hathaway. He first met the scammer on August 7, 2021 through a page on Facebook called "Anne Hathaway Club". He commented on something, she commented back pretending to be Hathaway. She then told him to move over to Google Hangouts to chat using her email address [email protected]. "She" first became friends and then more with him, asking for money to help her out because she was traveling and didn't have access to funds. Then she told him she could invest in bitcoin for him and make him a lot of money. Over the next several months he bought debit cards and gift cards, sending her the numbers through chat or email. He has been permitted to buy tens of thousands of dollars in gift cards from CVS, Vons and other stores. He then started opening credit cards in his own name, which he had never done before, spending $20k in the first month alone. This person has his email, phone number, passwords and a lot personal information, and used it to open a bank account in his name and remove money from his joint bank account with my mother into this new account that the scammer opened for him. In March of 2022, we were able to convince him that this is a scam, that he was not getting his money back and this is not the real Anne Hathaway. He closed his credit cards, changed his passwords and bank account information and filed a police report. However in the weeks since, he has been sucked back into the scam. This person told him he has now made $1.8 million on his bitcoin investment but he has to send $10k more to release the funds. We've explained to him that's not how investments work, but he doesn't believe us. We are worried he is going to lose all of his life savings and destroy the family if this person continues to scam him. We have reported to the police and FBI but have not heard anything back. He was also contacted by someone pretending Anne Hathaway from the email address [email protected]. And also contacted by someone pretending to be Jennifer Garner who asked him to send $200 to a charity through Zelle to someone named Kenneth Beck at the email address [email protected]. There was also a cancelled payment to this same person through Zelle at the email address [email protected]. I have also shared with law enforcement the card numbers from some of the debit cards and gift cards, hoping that might help track down the scammer. Unfortunately, my father is still in denial about being scammed and it is truly tearing our family apart. We believe he is experiencing some cognitive decline due to the fact that he truly thinks he is friends with Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Garner and continues to try to send money. This scam is a combination of celebrity impersonation, romance and investment fraud as the person is pretending to be a famous actor, manipulating his emotions by convincing him he now has a real friend or maybe even something more and getting him to send money for a bitcoin investment and even just to help out "a friend" who needs money because she doesn't have access to a phone or funds, despite being a wealthy celebrity.
