The same things happened to us. An apartment was posted in Zumper, an app where people list apartments for rent. We are new to the area but the apartment seemed too good to be true - located at 1000 Granville Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90049, a 3/2 for $1200 per month. I requested additional info thinking maybe the price was for a 1/1 and the 3/2 was a different price (something I have seen before with leasing companies listing a "starting price" but then the unit you want has a different price, as a way to drum up interest), and I got the same email.

Looks like I almost replied to a scam myself. Thank God I went with my gut feeling a did a little research. This is the reply I got from "Annie Senner"

Thanks for your reply. We own the place and our daughter lived there until 2 month ago when she got married and she moved to WA.
That`s why we decided to rent it.

Unfortunately, because of my job, it will be a bit difficult to meet you personally now for the moment we are in NY now and I am unable to travel right now. Last week I came there to meet a couple who was interested, but they never showed up, and it's not comfortable to fly back and forth from NY, especially when work commitments are made. Because of that we decide to make everything through Airbnb, an international company that mainly deals with rentals.
They will organize the inspection and will also assist you in managing the payment.

I`ll make the booking registration for you with Airbnb, and they will send you by e-mail the booking confirmation containing all the rental information including the payment information.
You`ll have to make a down payment of 1 month of rent to Airbnb and after they will receive it, an agent will be assigned for your reservation, which will contact you to inspect the place. Can be even the same day when the down payment was made.

If you like the place, you`ll sign the lease, you`ll get the keys from the Airbnb agent and you can move in right away.
The down payment is 100% refundable, after the inspection if you do not like the place and you do not want to rent it, Airbnb will return your down payment in full immediately.

If you would like to proceed, please give me your details (full name, current address and phone number) and we will make the registration for you with Airbnb.

Type of a scam Rental

The property was listed as $1000 a month for a 2 bed 2bath apartment in downtown San Jose. Upon contacting the apartment owner she gave a lengthy detail about her being in New York and could not meet in person. Only after did I pay $1000 down payment to “Airbnb” would I get to have Just a tour of the apartment. That then would be my 1st months rent and 2nd months rent and I could move in that same day. My suspicions were correct when I looked up popular rental scams and found this was a tactic used. No 2bed/2bath would be available for $1000 a month and no down payment should be needed to just tour and apartment
