He asked me where I live and I said right down the street. He said well, I can over right now and take a look. He also asked me if I wanted a ride...I said "no thank you.
He came into my yard carrying a "gutter guard". He showed it to me and explained how it works. He was very friendly, polite, called me by my name and complimented my yard and flower beds. I felt he was trustworthy especially after I saw the interaction between he and B.
After some friendly chit-chat, he said can you afford $1200? I said, oh no! He said how about $675. I said ok. So he said that he'll be in touch in a couple of days and can you give me a check today for $675? I wrote the check on my usual checking account (Wells Fargo) and he said "don't you have a local account?) I re-wrote the check on my local bank check.
He came back in a couple of days as he said he would...this added to my trust of him. He measured the gutters and said he's be in touch when he could install them. He called me a number of times between 6/17 and 10/21. It started with, it's going to rain for the next few days so I'll be in touch next week. H called a couple of weeks later and said " I haven't forgotten about you, I was sick, the company I'm dealing with now (out of state, but I don't remember where) needs another $300 in order to complete the order and ship it. I said ok. He said he'd be over in about 15 minutes to pick the check up which he did. Then, on 11/4 he called to say he's going to get this job done before the bad weather comes I just need $200 for additional parts for the installation that were not included in the shipment. Again I said ok. At some point after that it snowed and it got warmer and sunny. He came by one day to tell me he didn't forget about me or the job. He said, "I suppose your gutters are full of ice." I said no, they"re not because we've had these sunny days. Then he told me, uggh, I wish I had brought my ladder with me today. Winter came and went and I finally figured out that he was scamming me.
I tried to start filing a petition in small claims court, but I discovered the address he'd given me was false.
I texted him and called him, but no reply. His phone number isn't connected to his address or to his name per "Been Verified", "True ID" or our Information service (411)
So far, I've given him $985.
