I saw an advertisement on a Facebook group for housing for an apartment at 1183 Gates Avenue, Brooklyn NY, 11221. After getting in contact with the presumed secretary for “Lux Rentals,” I arranged an apartment tour with Jorge Vega (Phone #1: 332-250-6581 Phone #2: 332-235-8973 , X: https://x.com/hip_hip_jorge69?s=21) and physically saw the apartment. At the end, Mr. Vega informed me that to secure a spot in the apartment, I needed to give a good-faith deposit. This did not raise any red flags for me as this can happen when renting in New York City. After transferring the money via Cash app ($hiphipJorp), Mr. Vega and the secretary sent me a rental application (three consecutive monthly bank statements, three recent consecutive paystubs, Photo ID, Most recent tax return, four most recent rent receipts at other building). I filled it out within a few days, and I was told that the only step left was finding other roommates. At this point, contact with Mr. Vega became very difficult, though not impossible. As the communicated move-in deadline approached (August 1, 2023), Mr. Vega continuously told me that the landlord of the apartment was not communicating with him, though assured me that everything would be fine. For the record, research has shown that the building is potentially owned/managed by Sam / Ben Laundau , with the building’s associated LLC being registered at 103 Division Ave, Brooklyn, NY, 11249. Mr. Vega discouraged me from dropping out of the process, so I would not forfeit my good faith deposit. After the communicated move-in date came and went, Jorge became even more difficult to communicate with. After finally getting a hold of him, he assured me that he had another place for me to stay until an apartment could be found. At this point, I did not trust Mr. Vega and did not follow through with this plan however, I did request a refund. After reaching out a week later about the refund, Mr. Vega asked why I did not reach out to him about the apartment that he had allegedly found for me to stay. At this point, I politely communicated that I would like to be done with that whole affair and would like my money back. Mr. Vega, then before me that I should contact the secretary via email and request it. On August 9th, 2023, I received an email from the secretary stating that my refund request had been filed and that I would receive my money within 10 to 12 days. After two weeks of waiting with no refund or contact, I called Mr. Vega, and he told me that there was trouble since the deposit had been put into an escrow account and there was trouble withdrawing it, though he would work diligently to return my money. On September 5th, I once again emailed the secretary and asked when my refund would be available, to which I was told September 13th. When September 13 arrived, I sent a letter expressing my displeasure with that turn of events and expressed an intention to follow up with legal action if the issue was not resolved quickly. I was contacted by the secretary via email and told that the new refund date would be September 18th and to contact Mr. Vega again. At this point, Mr. Vega was not available by phone or text in any capacity. Since then, Mr. Vega’s phone numbers do not work and he has deleted his personal Facebook and LinkedIn pages. I have contacted former employers of Mr. Vega and none of them had good things to say about him. I would highly advise against working with Mr. Vega.
