Type of a scam Rental
Despite calls and emails for about three weeks, the property management company (owned and operated by one person who I dealt with) has not paid me rent for July 2016 and August 2016 to date.
I found out that this person (Robert Potvin) is a professional thief through a lawyer (via telephone) who has a case (potential more it seems) against the owner of this property management company …when I mentioned the first name, completed with answering the last name and company name…however this lawyer would like to charge $2,500 for services. It appears I am part of a scam of which I am not only one. My friend dealt with this company in the past months and fired this company receiving no news back (it was left up in the air). There is also information on a Court Case on this person (to be confirmed) regarding tax fraud.
Since a property management entity is the middle person between the landlord (me) and tenant, any ‘tenant’ related government entities cannot assist me at this point ie. The Ontario Tenant Review Board and the police will not much aside recording a report. Sadly, I am out of funds since I have to pay now mortgage and rent in Vancouver and paying a lawyer may not be an option. Also, many lawyers I called from the Law Society Referral Program cannot assist me due to conflict of interest…I am assuming they are acting as defence on a law suit against him and/or his property management company.
I have spoken to the tenant of my unit and he has not been getting services (repairs) from the property management company (the owner) for about 3 months (when the lease started)…he has been contacting them with response… yet the company has withdrawn funds. Tenant has being paying the property management company on time. To myself, however, the property management company has always been late paying since the first month of rent but now, July and August have not been deposited. The owner of the company initially had added in the contract that he was the company to sell my condo which I found odd and asked him to remove it. Also, information on his current website is false as well as the number listed. When I called the number in Ottawa, a Chinese student answered and told me that other people have called asking for money; he was not able to release the name of these other people due to privacy of information, he added. In addition, the house (mansion) where the owner of the company lives and where I met him to sign contract, has been rented to own (which I discovered) and not build by him as mentioned when I talked to him early this year and complimented him for his beautiful home.
It is not the first time in where property management companies do this. I am doing this, not so much for me anymore, it is for others being scammed by property management companies and to stop this thief. It is very frustrating.. the condo is my first property as a young professional and very unfairly this is happening to me.
