Type of a scam Employment
I encountered a potentially suspicious situation while applying for a remote job with Appen, a company that seemed legitimate based on their public appearance. The project in question is the "Yukkon" project. After passing a rigorous three-section exam, I found myself unable to access the platform, raising concerns about the legitimacy of the job and potential data harvesting.
Red Flags:
Email Access Requirement: The company required access to my Gmail account to assign projects and facilitate the examination process. This seemed unusual but was rationalized as necessary for the project.
Multi-Device Examination: The examination process itself required the use of both a computer and a mobile device, involving complex website integration for the test. This seemed overcomplicated for a job application.
Access Denied: After completing the test, I was unable to log back into the platform despite using the correct credentials. My account appeared to be nonexistent.
Research Findings:
Upon further research, I found multiple reports on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) site that mirror my experience. These reports also questioned the legitimacy of Appen's projects, suggesting a pattern.
Steps Taken for Security:
Changed Gmail passwords
Removed Appen from the list of apps with access to my Google account
Recommendations for Investigation:
Given the recurrent reports and my experience, I recommend that an investigation be launched into Appen's business practices. This should involve looking into the requirement for Gmail access, their selection process, and whether they are fraudulently harvesting information from applicants.
Conclusion:
Although Appen presents as a publicly-traded company with a U.S. headquarters, these red flags and corroborating reports suggest that caution is warranted. My intent is to alert authorities for a deeper look into Appen’s operations to determine their legitimacy and potential risks to applicants.
Please consider this report as a basis for further investigation. Thank you.
