Apple, Inc. Imposter Reports & Reviews (1)

- Hillsboro, OR, USA

I contacted a number I thought was Apple Support regarding a faulty APPLE.COM charge on a VISA account. The phone number was on my CapitalOne statement (866-712-7753) alongside the suspicious charge. The person who answered asked me about related charges -- other Apple services I had not ordered, He sounded alarmed and said he would forward my call to a senior fraud investigator at Apple. That man identified himself as Ryan McCall, employee ACX786, working out of Virginia (not Cupertino) at 571-487-5265. Irish accent. He said he found additional hacks in my Chase account, said Apple had been receiving a flood of scam reports, and asked me to load the tvqs (Team Viewer Quick Support) app on my Android phone. When opened, it showed 4 accounts I had never seen of varying amounts, the largest over $1,000. Some were for bitcoin purchases. He also queried me about my Target shopping app, which appeared to have a $2,000 charge I did not make. He explained that to clear out the fraud he would load $1,500 into my Chase credit card account. I would then purchase three $500 Apple gift cards (at no cost to myself); the scammer would be detected when the cards were used. Yes, I stupidly agreed, I bought two $500 cards, one on my Chase VISA at Hillsboro Home Depot (because no Apple cards with a large enough denomination were available) and one at Sunset Fred Meyer on my CapitalOne VISA. Because Fred Meyer has a limit on gift card purchases, I did not buy any other cards. I told Ryan I was done for the day. That would mean I still had $500 of his "credit" still in a VISA account, but the assumption was I'd bay another card the next day. He instructed me to carefully open the gift card packaging, reveal the redemption numbers on the cards, and photograph them. Big red flag: my last conversation with Ryan sounded like the classic abuser-type message -- don't talk with people about this or you might wreck things, don't go online, don't use your PC, stay away from your financial accounts. As soon as I got home, I contacted CapitalOne and Chase. I was able to verify through Home Depot and Target that both cards had already been spent down to $0, The deposit Ryan supposedly made to my VISA account never showed up. I have the text messages I received. I also looked up all the phone numbers. All of them are associated with shady addresses and names, definitely nothing about Apple or Ryan. I have some information in my phone records, and I've kept the text messages. I also have a tvqs ID number.
