The technician asked for access to my computer & said for me to stay on the line while we worked through the problem. He then indicated that we would need to change all product keys associated with the software packages that were installed on my system -- and that would involve buying new passcodes or key codes for the software.
He indicated that I would pay for the new key codes and that AppleCare would immediately reimburse me within hours. In order to avoid the risk of providing credit card information over the phone, he said that I would need to purchase a cash card / gift card and give him that information to pay for the new key codes.
That's when I should have discontinued the exchange, but failed to do so and agreed to purchase a gift card for $500.00 and provided the card information to the guy.
Then..... he said that he had reviewed my system and that additional funds (to the amount of $2,000.00 ) would be needed to rectify all of the breaches of security in my computer.
That's when I refused to do so and severed my connection with the guy. There was continued text chat for a number of minutes over my computer before the scammers disconnected.
During the process of our exchange (lasting about 1 1/2 hours) the guy provided several e-mail documents indicating my Apple Case Claim ID that had been established, a document indicating that I had successfully enrolled in the Apple Reimbursement Program that would 'guarantee' repayment of my $500, as well as a refund receipt (that I now realize is worthless) showing that I would get my money back!
In addition, the technician made a point of continuing to talk with me on the phone as I went to a local Walgreens to buy the gift card, I asked for a different number to talk to in an effort to verify that this was all legitimate. The number (315) 629-9840 was provided and I spoke to a Customer Service representative that confirmed the 'authenticity' of the scam.
While being suckered in this scam, I thought I was being diligent while all along I was being scammed!
