APS Employment Scam Reports & Reviews (1)

- Laurel, MD, USA

I received an email about a position in the role that I am looking for. It included PDFs with information about the company as well as the job itself including pay rate, benefits, etc. The pay was double than what I've seen for the role, which seemed too good to be true off the bat. The way they wanted to conduct the interview was to be contacted through Microsoft Teams. I reached out to schedule an interview and they responded back wondering about availability and that they were on MST time. (The business is on EST). They said the "interview" would take about 40 minutes and would be a chat back and forth that would then be forwarded to HR. Another red flag but I decided to go through with it. They asked me to confirm if I could speak English, had a clear record and knew about a few programs. Then they said I'll need an iPad Pro, which was mentioned in the job description, so I was aware of that potential cost but that it would be reimbursed. It was not explained why I would need to make that purchase. They asked me if I would be able to handle the duties lined out in the "briefing doc" or job description and that I would be conducting my work from home.

Then they said we would proceed to the next stage of onboarding and proceeded to send paragraph after paragraph of information. One stating that I would need to pay $59.99 USD to cover a year use of their server/web hosting so that I can access my training faster. "Usually we would cover the costs for your hosting account which you would use for training however we're yet to get your account on payroll. This is also to check your financial responsibility and commitment to the position." This is really where I've gotten suspicious. They again "reassured" me that I would be reimbursed for this cost and told me to get an Amazon voucher for $60 for digital Apple store and send a screenshot of the voucher code and order number. I did not. Stating that "I am not comfortable paying for something without accepting a job offer." Which they still hadn't sent me at the time even though they were talking to me like I got the position. They continued to tell me they were working on my offer letter then and there.

They were also talking about connecting with IT and HR to get my profile set up (even though I still hadn't accepted or SEEN an offer).

They were adamant about getting the proof of the voucher and me providing a nickname for the training server. Again, without me accepting an offer or seeing one. Since it was getting late into the evening, I told them I would have to continue the conversation the next day. They still continued to send me messages but I ignored them.

Then they also sent an offer letter to my email address, but the letter was in an illegible font which would never be used by a professional company, or any professional. That was my final red flag.
